UK to Europe removals: your questions

Costs, transit times and the customs position for all seven of our European corridors.

Cost

How much does it cost to move from the UK to Europe?

A one-bedroom part load (16 m³) to Belgium or northern France is typically £1,451 – £2,019. A three-bedroom house (45 m³) to Germany or central France is typically £4,459 – £6,204; to Switzerland or northern Italy £5,172 – £7,196; to central and southern Italy £6,243 – £8,686. The two variables that matter most are volume in cubic metres and how far the vehicle travels.

Why is a part load cheaper than hiring a van?

Because you only pay for the space you occupy. Your goods share the vehicle with other consignments on the same route, so the fixed cost of the run — driver, fuel, crossing, tolls — is spread across several customers instead of one.

Is there a minimum charge?

Yes. Below roughly 5 m³ (about 175 ft³) the per-cubic-metre rate stops reflecting reality, because handling and route cost dominate. Minimums run from £450 for Zone 1 to £900 for Zone 5.

Will the price change on moving day?

Not once we have surveyed. An online estimate is based on the inventory you entered; a free video survey confirms it. After that the price is fixed, which is why we ask about stairs, parking and carry distance upfront rather than discovering them on the morning.

Do you take a deposit?

A 25% deposit holds your vehicle and date. If our free survey then changes the price and you would rather not go ahead, we refund the deposit in full. The balance is due on the day we collect.

Timing

How long does a removal to Europe take?

Belgium and the Netherlands are 2–5 days, France and Germany 2–7 days, Switzerland 4–8 days, and Italy 5–10 days. A part load adds a short consolidation wait; a dedicated vehicle travels direct.

How far in advance should I book?

Four to six weeks for most routes. Six to eight weeks for southern France and Italy between June and September, when demand peaks.

Can I get a guaranteed delivery date?

Yes — take a dedicated vehicle, which travels on your date by definition. A part load is delivered within a window, which we confirm when you book.

Customs and paperwork

Do I have to pay customs duty moving to the EU?

Usually not. Transfer of residence relief exempts household goods you have owned and used for at least six months, provided you are moving your main home and have been resident in the UK for at least twelve months. It is not automatic — it must be applied for with a signed valued inventory.

What is a valued inventory?

A room-by-room list of everything being shipped with an approximate replacement value against each line. Every EU customs authority wants one, and it is also the basis of your insurance cover. Our quote tool builds most of it as you go.

Is Switzerland different?

Yes, materially. Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, so clearance uses Swiss Form 18.44 through an agent at Basel or Geneva, and the inventory must be in French, German or Italian depending on the canton. It adds roughly £140 versus an EU move.

What about a second home rather than a main move?

Second-home moves do not qualify for duty relief. Duty and import VAT may be assessed on the declared value, so budget for it and tell us at survey so the paperwork is right first time.

Practical

Can you move just a few items?

Yes. Small consignments travel as part loads on our scheduled runs. Anything from a few boxes and a bed upward is worth quoting.

Do you take cars, pianos or artwork?

Pianos, safes, pool tables and crated artwork are all handled — they are flagged as specialist in the quote tool so a surveyor confirms the approach. Vehicles are quoted separately; call us.

Is my stuff insured?

Goods-in-transit cover is included and priced on your declared replacement value: 3% when we pack, 5% when you pack. Insurers price the difference in risk, not us.

Can you store my things at either end?

Yes, at £6 per m³ — about £0.17 per ft³ — per week, in the UK or at destination. It is a common solution when completion dates do not line up.
