Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Nice
Reserving the kerb outside your door
The Ville de Nice does reserve the kerb, through the department that runs on-street paid parking, and how much notice it wants depends on where the vehicle will stand: five working days for an authorised parking space, seven where it will occupy a traffic lane, a pavement or a pedestrian area. A street controller inspects the site in those cases, and the City provides no signs.
Vieux-Nice is behind bollards
The old town is a pedestrian area closed by retractable bollards, and a removal there needs a temporary access authorisation, applied for online on the seven working days' notice. Vehicles are admitted only in an early-morning window; the paper goes behind the windscreen, and you may stop to load but not park. Anything left inside goes to the pound.
Where a monte-meubles may and may not stand
The city's own removal form has a box for the type of furniture lift. Two limits decide where it can go: none may be raised across a road, and none may work along the tram route while the overhead contact line is live. In the narrow old-town streets only the vehicle-mounted kind is authorised, and the application wants a sketch of the window and the lift's footprint.
Signed weight limits on the hill roads
Streets across Nice and the wider Métropole carry signed tonnage limits, and the Métropole publishes a map of them. A vehicle whose gross weight exceeds the limit needs a dérogation de tonnage from the mayor, which takes three weeks from a complete file — far longer than any parking notice. Where no dérogation is possible, the load has to change vehicle at a kerb the lorry can reach.
The low-emission zone on the seafront
Nice's Zone à Faibles Émissions mobilité covers the Promenade des Anglais, the quays and the hypercentre between the Voie Mathis and the sea. It catches less than you might expect: only goods vehicles over three and a half tonnes, buses and coaches in the oldest Crit'Air classes are shut out, so a car or a van is not among them. The lorry is the vehicle to check.

Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Nice end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. Its authorisation takes fifteen calendar days, and the city bars removals on Sundays, public holidays and during event periods set by municipal order.
Mougins and the Sophia Antipolis communes
Mougins British International School and the Sophia Antipolis technology park draw UK families west of Nice. Private lanes and steep drives are the norm.
Monaco
A different country and three different authorities: the Mairie for marked parking spaces, another office for unmarked highway, a third for the harbour.
The road from the UK to Nice
Route: Eurotunnel to Calais, then the A26 to Troyes, the A5 and A31 past Dijon, the A6 to Lyon, the A7 down the Rhône valley and the A8 from Aix-en-Provence — about 770 miles from Calais.
Tolled almost the whole way, and the class at the plaza is set by height and weight rather than by what the vehicle is called: anything three metres tall is charged as a lorry. No alpine pass, no long tunnel. The A8 arrives above the city on viaducts, and every descent into Nice is a local road.

When to move
Carnival, February 2027
The Ville de Nice gives the next carnival as 9 to 28 February 2027, nearly three weeks of parades through the centre and along the seafront. The Nice académie's winter school holidays run 20 February to 8 March 2027, so the end of that month is congested twice over. Move either side of it if you can.
Check the city's closures page first
The Ville de Nice keeps a standing page of major traffic restrictions: street-by-street driving bans, suspended parking, changed bus routes and altered delivery access. A championship or a parade on the Promenade des Anglais can take away your street and its parking for the length of the event. Check it before you settle a seafront, port or old-town date.
Summer on the coast road
Summer is the pinch here. School holidays for the Nice académie begin on Saturday 3 July 2027, and the A8 along the coast fills from then on. If the date is movable, late spring and early autumn leave far more room for both the street and the survey.
Paperwork once you arrive in Nice
The prefecture is not a counter you can visit
Residence permits for Nice are handled by the préfecture des Alpes-Maritimes, which takes enquiries from foreign nationals only by electronic means. You are admitted to the foreigners' service only with an appointment confirmation or a summons to collect a permit. A first professional-immigration application now goes by post rather than at an appointment.
The one document everything asks for
One piece of paper does most of the work here: a lease, a notarial attestation of purchase, or a recent electricity or gas bill. The city's removal parking form will not reserve a space without it, and the syndic and the utilities will each ask for it again. Have several copies before the date.
Your block's syndic
Nine Nice homes in ten are flats, so the first person you deal with locally is usually the syndic de copropriété, the managing agent for the building. Tell them your date early, and ask what the building's own rules say about the lift and the common parts before the day.
Customs when moving to France
France applies EU transfer-of-residence relief. You will need a detailed valued inventory, proof of at least twelve months' UK residence, and evidence of a French address. Goods must have been owned and used for six months or more.

Can the removal vehicle just use a loading bay in Nice?

Permanent bays, marked with a continuous yellow line, are for deliveries at all hours. Forty minutes does not cover a flat, which is why the city runs a reserved-space procedure.
We are moving into Vieux-Nice — how does the vehicle actually get in?
Through a retractable bollard, with an authorisation the city grants in advance. You pull up to the kerbside totem, speak to the municipal control room over the intercom, give the name on the authorisation, and the bollard is lowered for you. It rises again behind each vehicle, so nobody follows through and nobody reverses. Inside, it is walking pace and pedestrians first.
Does a Nice parking authorisation cover an address in Antibes, Cannes or Monaco?
No. A Nice authorisation stops at the city boundary, and every commune along this coast runs its own procedure on its own notice period. Cannes will not grant one for a Sunday, a public holiday or an event period. Monaco is not even the same country: a marked parking space, an unmarked stretch of highway and a berth at Port Hercule are three different authorities. The address decides the paperwork, not the city you searched for.
We are furnishing a holiday flat in Nice. Does that change the customs side?
Yes. Nice has a large stock of second homes, and French relief on household goods applies only to a transfer of main residence — furnishing a holiday flat is an ordinary import instead. Tell us which one you are doing before the survey, because the inventory and the proof of address are built differently for each. Getting it wrong is found out at the border.
What does the survey need to see in a Nice apartment block?
The floor, the lift and the way in. Most Nice main homes were built between the war and 1990, so lifts range from none at all to one that will not take a mattress on its end. Show us the staircase, the landing turns and the window a lift might reach, and say what the street outside allows — bollards, a tonnage sign, a tram line.
