Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Brussels
Signs come from your commune, not the Region
Kerb space is reserved by hiring official E1 no-parking signs from the commune the address sits in — réservation d'emplacement de stationnement, or parkeerplaats reserveren. Nineteen communes, nineteen desks, nineteen sets of deadlines: the published ones run from seven to ten working days. The City of Brussels also wants a regional OSIRIS authorisation and photo ID behind the request. Tell us the commune and the frontage the vehicle needs.
When the signs actually go out
The commune installs the signs; you do not put them out yourself. Ixelles sets them at least forty-eight hours before the reservation starts, and only once the payment it asks for five working days ahead has reached its account. Schaerbeek and Anderlecht publish urgent procedures for shorter notice. The date that matters is not moving day but the day the commune wants the papers.
The low-emission zone covers all nineteen communes
Brussels runs a zone de basses émissions over the whole Brussels-Capital Region; the R0 ring and certain signed approaches to the park-and-ride car parks sit outside it. There is no sticker. A foreign-registered vehicle, British plates included, goes on the lez.brussels register, which costs nothing and lasts five years, either before the trip or within five days of it. Cameras read plates at the entries, the exits and inside.
No tunnels over three and a half tonnes
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are banned from the Brussels road tunnels, so the ones under Rue de la Loi, Rue Belliard and Avenue Louise are out. A lorry works the surface boulevards instead, at the regional default of 30 km/h, and Bruxelles Mobilité posts URCET inspectors beside the most sensitive tunnel mouths. Allow more time between the ring and the door than a motorway arrival suggests.
Old fronts, and the lift that goes up them
Brussels delivers into old stock: regional statistics put the great majority of the city's buildings at earlier than 1960. An external furniture lift, a monte-meubles, is routine here rather than exceptional. Standing one on the road is its own temporary occupation of the highway, applied for from the commune alongside the signs. Say which floor, and whether a window on it opens wide enough.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Brussels end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

European Quarter (Schuman)
EU staff, and it straddles two communes; the Rue de la Loi and Rue Belliard tunnels that make it driveable are shut to a removal lorry.
Ixelles / Elsene
Flagey, Châtelain and Place Brugmann. Its Service OTVP asks seven working days, and anything over thirty metres of kerb needs thirty calendar days and a letter to the Bourgmestre.
Uccle / Ukkel
The southern belt, with European School Brussels I on Avenue du Vert Chasseur and its Berkendael site over the line in Forest — two communes, two desks.
Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and Woluwe-Saint-Pierre
European School Brussels II sits on Avenue Oscar Jespers, with its Evere site on Avenue du Bourget. The commune boundary decides which desk issues your signs.
Watermael-Boitsfort / Watermaal-Bosvoorde
The International School of Brussels is on Kattenberg, at the edge of the Forest of Soignes; still inside the LEZ and the region-wide 30 km/h default.
Tervuren and Kraainem
Flemish Brabant, so no Brussels LEZ and no OSIRIS. The British School of Brussels sits on Pater Dupierreuxlaan; a new intercommunal zone keeps through lorries out.
Wezembeek-Oppem and Zaventem
Also outside the Region. Wezembeek-Oppem takes the parkeerverbod request through Eaglebe, at a minimum of five working days.
Waterloo
St John's International School is on Drive Richelle, in Walloon Brabant: outside the Brussels LEZ, and the kerb reservation is a Walloon commune matter.
The road from the UK to Brussels
Route: Eurotunnel or ferry to Calais, then the A16 past Dunkerque, the E40 across Flanders and the Brussels ring — about 120 miles from Calais.
One motorway all the way: the A16 becomes the Belgian A18 at Adinkerke, then the E40 runs past Bruges and Ghent to the ring. No passes, no seasonal closures. Belgium charges goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes by the kilometre, and the on-board unit has to be running across the whole network, not only the motorways.

When to move
The car-free Sunday
One Sunday each September the whole Brussels-Capital Region closes to motor traffic — the dimanche sans voiture, or autoloze zondag — between the morning and the evening, and no move runs that day without a derogation. Each of the nineteen communes issues its own derogations, so the date is worth checking against your delivery week before you fix it.
Winter Wonders in the Pentagone
From late November to early January the Christmas market takes the Grand-Place, the Bourse, place Sainte-Catherine, the Vismet, place de la Monnaie and place De Brouckère. A December move into the central pedestrian core is worked around it, and the early-morning loading window becomes the only realistic slot.
Two school calendars in one city
French-speaking schools in Brussels run a seven-weeks-on, two-weeks-off rhythm set by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, while the Dutch-speaking network keeps a different calendar in the same streets, and the international schools set their own terms again. There is no single moving season here, so check the calendar your children are actually on before picking a week.
Paperwork once you arrive in Brussels
Declaring the address, commune by commune
The declaration goes to the commune you actually live in — in the City of Brussels, the Centre Administratif or a liaison office at Laeken, Louise, Neder-Over-Heembeek or Haren. Federal rules give you eight working days from moving in, and no commune updates the register until a police officer has called round and found you there.
Why the commune entry matters to your customs file
Belgian duty and VAT relief on household goods turns on actually moving your normal residence here, and the commune entry is the local proof of it. The federal rules run on twelve-month and six-month clocks, so the date you declare at the commune matters. The Finance Ministry publishes no document checklist, so send us what the commune gives you and we build the file from it.
British passports are third-country passports now
A British citizen moving to Belgium now, outside the Withdrawal Agreement, falls under the general rules for third-country nationals. The passport is visa-exempt for short stays, but residence has to be settled before you move, not after, and the Office des Étrangers is the authority on which route applies. We do not advise on immigration.

Moving from Brussels back to the UK
Most of the load home is a posting ending — the EU institutions, NATO, a law firm, a trade federation. Leaving is as formal as arriving: you declare your departure abroad at the commune that registered you, and it is the commune, not the Region, that records it. Tell us which one, because its counter hours decide when that can be done.

Which office reserves the parking space outside my Brussels flat?
Your commune does, not the Region. Each of the nineteen Brussels communes hires out the official E1 no-parking signs itself and installs them, under its own name for the procedure and its own notice period. Ixelles routes it through its Service OTVP; the City of Brussels wants a regional OSIRIS authorisation behind the request. The commune name on your new address is the first thing we need.
Do I need to register my vehicle for the Brussels low-emission zone?
Yes, if it is foreign-registered — British plates included — and you are driving into any of the nineteen communes. The register is on lez.brussels, it costs nothing, it lasts five years, and it can be completed before the trip or within five days of driving in. There is no sticker or vignette. Diesel Euro 5 cars and vans have been shut out of the zone since the start of 2026.
Can a removal lorry get into the Brussels pedestrian zone?
Only in the morning window, and only with a pass. In the City of Brussels pedestrian zone around Boulevard Anspach, loading and unloading is allowed between four and eleven in the morning where the street signs permit. Access is by a numeric code for the bollards plus a laissez-passer displayed in the windscreen, requested from the City's pedestrian-zone desk at least seventy-two hours ahead.
We are moving to Tervuren rather than into Brussels. Does that change anything?
Quite a lot. Tervuren, Kraainem and Wezembeek-Oppem are in Flemish Brabant, outside the Brussels-Capital Region, so the Brussels zone and OSIRIS do not apply and the signs come from the municipality's own system — Wezembeek-Oppem takes requests through Eaglebe. Since June 2026 those municipalities sit inside an intercommunal heavy-traffic zone, but deliveries and local traffic are exempt from it.
Can I just put cones out to keep the space free?
No. The City of Brussels says blocking a space with chairs, pallets or other objects is an offence under the Highway Code and the general police regulations. Without the commune's authorisation you have no claim to that kerb at all, and Schaerbeek warns that any towing is at your own risk where the formalities were not followed. Hire the signs from the commune and let it place them.
