Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Geneva
The Ville de Genève grants the street, in working days
Inside the city, standing a vehicle on public space for a move is subject to a permission from the Service de l'espace public, and the request must be lodged at least ten working days before the occupation begins. Traffic-signing instructions come separately, from the canton. Any person or firm carrying out the move may apply.
Reserving the bays, and the plates already in them
Bays on the public highway can be reserved for a move for up to eight days, and the canton sends you to the commune where the vehicle will stand. The panels go out at least three days ahead, counting neither Sundays nor public holidays, so a bad week eats five calendar days. Whoever puts them out records the plates already parked there for the police.
One conurbation, a different rule every few streets
A permission from the City stops at the city boundary, and the conurbation is a ring of separate communes. Each has its own office, its own form and its own notice period. Which office applies is decided by where the vehicle will stand, not by where you are moving from, so the address settles who is asked.
Stick'AIR, and why there is no permanent zone
Switzerland has no permanent low-emission zone. What Geneva has is circulation différenciée, switched on by the canton when air pollution rises or is forecast to rise. While it runs, a vehicle must show an authorised Stick'AIR macaron to drive inside the central perimeter, between six in the morning and ten at night. The perimeter covers almost all of the city and parts of Carouge, Cologny, Lancy and Vernier.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Geneva end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

Carouge
An eighteenth-century Sardinian grid of one- and two-storey houses with courtyard gardens. The Service de l'urbanisme wants the street request two weeks ahead.
Grand-Saconnex and Pregny-Chambésy
The Palais des Nations and Ecolint's Campus des Nations sit here. Both are communes in their own right, so the permission is asked of the commune, not the City.
Cologny
Lakeside villas on the right bank. Its own public-domain form goes to the municipal police, and part of the commune lies inside the Stick'AIR perimeter.
Chêne-Bougeries
On the road out towards Annemasse. Its police municipale reserve the moving bays, on a request sent a week before the date.
Meyrin
CERN's Swiss entrance. The Sécurité municipale posts the moving signs itself, on seventy-two hours' notice.
Ferney-Voltaire and Saint-Genis-Pouilly
French communes on CERN's other side. A delivery here clears into the EU rather than into Switzerland, and the paperwork is entirely different.
The road from the UK to Geneva
Route: Eurotunnel to Calais, then the A26 to Reims and Troyes, the A5 and A31 to Dijon, the A39, and the A40 and A41 to the Swiss border at Bardonnex — about 500 miles from Calais.
The French leg is tolled throughout. Switzerland has no toll booths: a vignette covers vehicles up to three and a half tonnes, and anything heavier pays the per-kilometre RPLP on every Swiss road, not only the motorway. Swiss law also caps a road train at forty tonnes, below the British limit.

When to move
Two public holidays no other canton keeps
The Jeûne genevois falls on the Thursday after the first Sunday in September — 9 September 2027 next — and 31 December marks the Restauration de la République. The canton closes on both, and a delivery date on either is a day lost.
The Escalade takes the Old Town twice
The Course de l'Escalade runs through the Vieille-Ville on 5 and 6 December 2026, starting from the promenade des Bastions, and the Fête follows around the twelfth with costumed processions through the same lanes. Neither the City's race page nor its festival page publishes a street list, so treat both weekends as lost for an Old Town address.
Paperwork once you arrive in Geneva
Announcing your arrival to the OCPM
Geneva takes this at cantonal level rather than at a town hall. You announce your arrival to the Office cantonal de la population et des migrations, and the same office is told when you leave again. It applies to Swiss nationals, to EU and EFTA citizens and to everyone else alike, and what you must produce depends on your status.
One office does what two do elsewhere
For a foreign national the OCPM is both the registration desk and the migration office: the arrival notice and the residence title are dealt with by one cantonal service, which is not how every canton arranges it. A household settling on the French side of the border reports to a mairie instead, on an entirely different set of papers.
Customs when moving to Switzerland
Switzerland is not in the EU. You need Swiss customs Form 18.44 (Effets de déménagement), a signed valued inventory in duplicate, a residence permit or confirmation of application, and a rental contract. Clearance is handled by our Swiss agent at Basel or Geneva.

Moving from Geneva back to the UK
Geneva's exit paperwork starts before the lorry does. The OCPM wants your departure notice two weeks ahead of the date and sends no automatic confirmation, so keep your own proof. Swiss export is light — an inventory presented at the export office — but HMRC's transfer-of-residence approval must be in hand before the load reaches Britain.

Does a UK-registered lorry need an emission sticker for Geneva?
Only while a pollution peak is running, and then it is the Stick'AIR macaron. Vehicles registered abroad are covered exactly like Swiss ones, and goods vehicles lost their transition in January 2022, so there is no removals exemption to fall back on. A French Crit'Air already carried for the run through France is recognised here, because its categories match.
Does a furniture lift need a permission of its own here?
No, it goes on the same one. The City's authorisation covers whatever stands on public space for the move — light vehicles, heavy vehicles and lifting equipment alike — so a monte-meubles, an external furniture lift, is written into the same request and the same ten working days.
We are moving for CERN. Does it matter which side of the border we live on?
It decides your customs file. CERN has a Swiss site at Meyrin and a French one beyond the fence, and families take addresses on both sides. A Meyrin address is a Swiss import, declared on the Swiss removal-goods form; a Pays de Gex address is an EU import, with different paperwork and a different commune to ask about the street. Say which when you ask for a price.
Can a vehicle reach a flat in the Vieille-Ville?
Only through the bollards, and only at the hours they allow. The Old Town's pedestrian and shared-space lanes are closed by retractable posts, and the City is adding more of them. Today the lanes open to ayants droit — residents, traders, taxis and the emergency services — from eight at night until seven in the morning, and the City has said that from autumn 2026 the open window becomes the four hours after seven.
