Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Amsterdam
Reserving the bays outside the door
Kerb space is reserved through the City's Parkeervakken reserveren procedure, a TVM. Gemeente Amsterdam wants the request at least six working days ahead with a site plan of the spot, and puts up the signs itself. The bays are for loading and unloading, never for parking cars. A car left standing in them can be towed away.
Inside the S100 the rules stack up
The S100 centre ring runs along the Nassaukade, Stadhouderskade, Mauritskade, Zeeburgerdijk, Piet Heinkade, De Ruijterkade and Houtmankade. Inside it sits the uitstootvrije zone, Amsterdam's zero-emission zone for vans and lorries, and a heavy-traffic zone where anything over 7.5 tonnes needs an exemption. That exemption is granted only below thirty tonnes and under ten metres long.
The quay strip has its own weight limit
Along a canal wall the City limits the strip between half a metre and three metres from the water to 3,500 kilograms for a vehicle, and to 500 kilograms a square metre for anything placed on it. Bridges carry no fixed maximum and are judged case by case. So on the water's edge only a small vehicle stands; the load shuttles to it.
The verhuislift, and where it may stand
A verhuislift, the external ladder lift that reaches a window from the street, has no number plate, so Amsterdam treats it as an object rather than a vehicle. Outside stadsdeel Centrum it can go on the pavement or on up to two parking bays after a notification made at least forty-eight hours ahead. In Centrum, and on any quay or bridge, an objectvergunning is required instead.
Camera points and signed hours
Four points in the old centre are closed by camera: the Singel at the Spui, Rembrandtplein at the corner of Amstelstraat, Muntplein, and the Paleisstraat between the Dam and the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. Entering one lawfully needs an RVV verkeersontheffing, a traffic exemption, which does not allow parking. Streets carry their own signed hours too: on the odd side of the Damrak, loading stops when the bollards rise at eleven.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Amsterdam end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

Grachtengordel and the Jordaan
Seventeenth-century canal houses on UNESCO-listed streets. Every restriction applies at once here: zones, quay weights, and an object permit for anything on the street.
Oud-Zuid and the Museumkwartier
Late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century apartment blocks with shared staircases. The British School of Amsterdam is on Havenstraat, and the City's zone map settles each address.
De Pijp and Oud-West
Dense side streets just beyond the Stadhouderskade and Nassaukade line, so the S100 boundary decides which rules a delivery meets.
Amstelveen
A separate municipality south of the city, home to the International School of Amsterdam and the Netherlands' largest Japanese community. It publishes no bay reservation for removal lorries.
Haarlem
Gabled houses and cobbles like the old centre here, but its own zero-emission zone over the Centraal Stedelijk Gebied and its own temporary parking permit.
Hoofddorp and Haarlemmermeer
Modern housing beside Schiphol, from single-family homes to low-rise apartment blocks, with several international schools including Optimist International School and Haarlemmermeer Lyceum.
Hilversum and the Gooi
Villas, historic villages and converted farms, with the International School Hilversum and its primary counterpart. It is not on the national zero-emission zone list.
Almere
Spacious houses with gardens and off-street parking, and a new-town layout, so a full-size vehicle normally reaches the door.
The road from the UK to Amsterdam
Route: Folkestone to Calais by Eurotunnel, then the E40 past Bruges and Ghent, the E17 through Antwerp, and the E19 and A2 north to the A10 ring — about 230 miles from Calais.
The run crosses Flanders throughout, its only tunnel the Kennedy on the Antwerp ring. Vehicles reach Amsterdam on the A10, which is where the city's own zone rules begin. What stops a vehicle here lies inside that ring rather than on the road to it.

When to move
Koningsdag shuts the centre
Koningsdag 2027 falls on Tuesday 27 April, with Koningsnacht the evening before, on Monday 26 April. The centre inside the S100 is normally closed to traffic for the day and reachable only by emergency services. The Dutch May school holiday for region noord surrounds it, so the whole fortnight is a poor one to move into central Amsterdam.
Events stop the permits
Around big events the City refuses bay reservations and object permits outright in the affected streets, and the blackout is published on the permit page rather than the events calendar. The two do not always give the same window, and a street that cannot be reserved cannot be delivered to.
Region noord keeps its own holidays
Amsterdam keeps the Dutch school-holiday calendar for region noord, one of three staggered regions, so its summer break does not run with the rest of the country. Families move inside it, so ask early and leave room for the six working days a bay reservation needs. The autumn and spring dates are advisory, and schools may set their own.
Paperwork once you arrive in Amsterdam
Registering at a Stadsloket
Anyone moving to Amsterdam from abroad for longer than four months must register with the City in person at a Stadsloket, a City Office, within five days of arriving. No appointment is needed, except in Weesp, and every family member moving with you has to come too. Registration is what produces your BSN, the Dutch citizen service number.
The proof the customs file needs
Ask for the proof of registration while you are still at the counter and send it to us: it is the document Dutch Customs asks for first. Where the gemeente has not recorded you yet, it accepts instead a deregistration slip from the country you left, with an employment contract, an employer's statement, a work permit, or the contract for the Dutch home.
Customs when moving to Netherlands
The Dutch Douane grants transfer-of-residence relief on a signed valued inventory plus BSN registration or a rental contract at the destination. Applications are usually processed quickly.

Moving from Amsterdam back to the UK
The run home meets the same quay limit and the same window in reverse: the load shuttles out to a vehicle standing clear of the water. Leaving for longer than eight months in any twelve, you must tell the City; deregister at a Stadsloket on the day you travel and you are handed the confirmation letter the City says customs will take.

How long does a removal to Amsterdam take?
Transit to Amsterdam is typically 2–5 days door to door. We run weekly, both directions. A part load waits for its scheduled run and is given a delivery window; a dedicated vehicle travels direct on the date you choose.
Do I need to reserve parking for a removal in Amsterdam?
Yes. Kerb space is reserved through the City's TVM procedure, and without it there are no signs, no lawful place to stand and no right to have a blocking car moved. Parking on a cycle path, a tram track or the carriageway is forbidden. The City's page does not say who may lodge the application, which is worth settling before a date is held.
Can a removal lorry get to a house on the Amsterdam canals?
Usually not to the door. Inside the S100 a vehicle over 7.5 tonnes needs an exemption, that exemption caps length at ten metres, and within three metres of the water the quay strip takes no more than 3,500 kilograms. The City's own advice is to use lighter vehicles and separate journeys, which is what a canal-ring delivery looks like.
My Amsterdam flat has a hoisting beam. Will you use it?
No. The hijsbalk, the hoisting beam above the gable, is old timber of unknown condition on a facade that may be listed, so the safe answer is an external verhuislift standing in the street instead. Show us the window, the floor and the width of the stairwell at your survey.
Is there an emission sticker for driving into Amsterdam?
No. The Netherlands has no equivalent of a French Crit'Air or a German Umweltplakette: there is no sticker and nothing to display on the windscreen. Amsterdam's uitstootvrije zone inside the S100, and the milieuzone in the belt between the A10 and the S100, are read from the number plate by camera, so the plate itself is what has to qualify.
Do you deliver to Amstelveen and Haarlem as well?
Yes, and each has its own procedure. Amstelveen publishes no bay reservation for a removal lorry at all; its verhuisvergunning is a temporary parking permit for a car in the customer's own name. Haarlem issues a temporary parking permit by the half day or full day, applied for with DigiD or eHerkenning, and runs its own zero-emission zone.
How do I find out whether my Amsterdam street is reachable?
Use bereikbaarheid.amsterdam.nl, the City's Reachability site, which shows road closures and loading and unloading information. Its number-plate lookup runs on the Dutch vehicle register, so a UK-plated vehicle cannot be checked there. Map data has no legal standing either: the signs on the street decide. Send us the postcode and a photograph of the frontage.
