Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Utrecht
The wharf cellars decide the vehicle
The city protects those cellars with hard limits on the streets above them: no axle load over two tonnes including the load, no goods vehicle over three and a half tonnes in total, nothing wider than two metres thirty. Cameras read the plate and the fine is automatic. No street list is published; the city sends you to the national reachability map to check your own address.
A permission, not a booking
A verhuiswagen, a removal van, may load and unload in an ordinary parking bay without paying the charge, and must be marked with signs or red-and-white barriers; barrier tape is forbidden. That is a permission, not a booking: no bay is held for you. Closing the street is agreed with the city's temporary traffic measures desk only where nothing else will work, at least ten working days ahead.
The works parking permit is for Dutch businesses
The nearest thing to a booked space is the parkeervergunning werkzaamheden, a works parking permit for a permit-holders-only street. Utrecht sells it to businesses only: the applicant must give a Dutch Chamber of Commerce number, and the request goes in at least ten working days ahead. A temporary vehicle exemption is a separate product, and the city refuses one for loading in a pedestrian area that has delivery windows.
The zero-emissiezone over the centre
Utrecht runs a zero-emissiezone for vans and lorries over exactly the same central area as its older milieuzone, and it is in force. What is on hold is the separate plan to widen that milieuzone to older diesel cars and buses, which is why a private car is caught by neither at present and a hired van may well be.
Morning windows, and where a big vehicle may stand
A pedestrian-zone address in the old centre loads between six in the morning and half past eleven, daily, and only a vehicle that meets the zero-emission conditions may go in. From six in the evening until eight in the morning, anything over six metres long or two metres forty high is banned from the public space; overnight it may stand only on named business parks such as Lage Weide.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Utrecht end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

Binnenstad and the wharfs
Wharf-cellar limits, the zero-emissiezone and a morning-only pedestrian window all land on the same address here, so the centre is shuttle work.
Wittevrouwen, Vogelenbuurt and Tuindorp
North-east of the centre by the Griftpark: old and new houses mixed, and the singel streets that bound the zone count as inside it.
Wilhelminapark and the east
Large characterful houses between the centre and Utrecht Science Park, so check the postcode against the zone edge before choosing the vehicle.
Oog in Al
A quiet residential neighbourhood immediately west of the centre, outside the current zone and off the werfkelder streets, so the vehicle size is not forced.
Leidsche Rijn
New-build family housing with its own station and quite large properties, and it sits outside the current zone, so approach and parking are straightforward.
De Bilt and Bilthoven
Its own town hall, north-east by Utrecht Science Park and reached from the A27 and A28; houses are relatively large with plenty of outdoor space.
Zeist
A separate municipality east of the city near the A12 and A28, with Driebergen-Zeist station on the line to Utrecht Centraal; its own rules apply.
Amersfoort
The region's second city runs a zero-emission zone of its own over the core shopping streets, so an address there follows Amersfoort's rules, not Utrecht's.
The road from the UK to Utrecht
Route: Eurotunnel from Folkestone or a Dover ferry, then the coastal motorway across Flanders, round the Antwerp ring and north to Utrecht — about 200 miles from Calais.
Utrecht sits inland, so the ring road is easy and the difficulty starts at the city boundary. A lorry over three and a half tonnes pays Belgium by the kilometre, then the Dutch levy that replaced the Eurovignette in July 2026. Viapass warns that a Dutch box can show green in Belgium and still be paying nothing.

When to move
New binnenstad rules from January 2027
From 1 January 2027 Utrecht changes the rules for lorries and vans in the binnenstad, the old inner city. Vehicles over seven and a half tonnes are shut out altogether, a large part of it is capped at three and a half tonnes, and lorries longer than ten metres may not enter. That start date was already put back once and the policy is still under appeal.
King's Day empties the vrijmarkt area
Koningsdag, King's Day, empties the centre. Utrecht imposes a parking ban across the vrijmarkt area, the streets given to the open-air market, from three the afternoon before until midnight on the day itself, and tows cars from the moment the ban starts. The city draws that area on a map rather than listing streets, and sets the times afresh each year.
Paperwork once you arrive in Utrecht
Registering at the Stadskantoor
Utrecht asks you to book the registration appointment within five days of the move. Bring valid identity documents for each person, proof of lawful residence in the Netherlands, and the tenancy or purchase contract for the Utrecht address. The city then allows itself up to four weeks to record the registration.
The Utrecht International Center
The Utrecht International Center is the region's official desk for internationals, run with the province, the university and the cities of Utrecht and Amersfoort. It helps newcomers combine the IND formalities with the municipal ones. Anyone who first came to live here after the end of 2020 falls outside the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and needs a residence permit from the IND for a stated purpose.
Customs when moving to Netherlands
The Dutch Douane grants transfer-of-residence relief on a signed valued inventory plus BSN registration or a rental contract at the destination. Applications are usually processed quickly.

Moving from Utrecht back to the UK
The run home starts in the same streets, so a centre collection meets the wharf-cellar limits and the morning window again, and a lift on the pavement needs the same permission checked. Tell the gemeente you are emigrating before you go: your entry in the population register then moves from resident to non-resident.

My Utrecht street is closed by a bollard. How does the vehicle get in?
You collect the key yourself, in person. Utrecht issues bollard keys at the service point in the Stadskantoor on Stadsplateau 1, Monday to Friday between nine and five, and you take a completed declaration form, valid identity, the number of the bollard from the city's map, and any vehicle exemption the street requires. A Saturday arrival cannot get one, so the key has to be collected in the week before.
Do I need a furniture lift for a flat in Utrecht?
Often, yes. Most homes in Utrecht are apartments — the municipal housing survey puts the share at well over half — and an upper floor with a narrow staircase is the normal case rather than the exception. The Dutch answer is a verhuislift, an external furniture lift raised from the street to a window or balcony. It needs firm standing and several clear metres in front of the facade. Does a furniture lift on the street need permission in Utrecht?
It is a municipal matter, so the answer depends on the address. The national business portal treats a lift for a move as an object placed on the public road: usually that needs a permit from the municipality, but where the object stands only briefly a notification can be enough. Which applies is looked up for your street through the Omgevingsloket, the national environment counter. Utrecht's own permit page for objects on municipal ground does not mention furniture lifts at all.
Is my Utrecht address inside the zero-emission zone?
Check the city's own zone map. The zone runs roughly to the ring of singels and takes in the station and Jaarbeurs side, but the boundary streets themselves lie inside it rather than outside, which is where people go wrong. Utrecht publishes no street list for the wharf-cellar limits either, so an address near the edge is worth looking up twice.
Do the same rules apply in the towns around Utrecht?
No — each municipality writes its own. Houten grants a temporary exemption for its bollarded centre and names a house move among the reasons, and drops the bollards on Monday to Saturday mornings. De Bilt and Zeist are separate town halls again, with their own procedures to check per address. Amersfoort runs a zero-emission zone of its own. A permission bought in Utrecht carries no weight over the boundary.
