Getting a removal vehicle to your door in The Hague
Nobody can book you a space at the kerb
The municipality puts it flatly: parking space cannot be reserved in advance. What it allows instead is a removal vehicle standing in a paid-parking area without paying, but only while the move is genuinely under way — coffee breaks and other interruptions are paid for. The visitor permit it suggests as a fallback belongs to someone already registered at the address, which an arriving household is not.
Pollers, and the windows they open in
Much of the old centre is closed by pollers, rising bollards that sink for approved vehicles only inside published windows — usually five in the morning until half past eleven on weekdays, an hour later at weekends, with clusters K, O, S and V having no window at all. Around the Gedempte Gracht, heavier lorries and vehicles beyond twelve metres are sent another way during those hours.
A house move is a reason the city accepts
For a job inside a bollard cluster outside those hours, the city grants a short incidental exemption and names a verhuizing, a house move, among the qualifying reasons. It wants the request at least six working days beforehand and usually takes five working days over it. Weekends do not count, so a Friday delivery means starting the paperwork the week before.
The portiekwoning and its four front doors
The typical home here is the Haagse portiekwoning. An open stair climbs from the pavement to a landing of four front doors: two open into first-floor flats, two hide enclosed stairs to the second floor. TU Delft's housing typology counts well over a hundred thousand of these walk-ups in the city, built between the 1900s and the 1960s without lifts, and names adding one as a retrofit problem.
The zone now reaches the coast as well
The zero-emissiezone covers the centre inside the Centrumring and, from 2026, a coastal band reaching into parts of Scheveningen, Segbroek, Loosduinen and Haagse Hout. It binds vans and lorries in business use, not cars. Scheveningen harbour is left out of it and runs as a milieuzone instead, on its own standard. Boundaries are drawn street by street, so a postcode settles it where a district name will not.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the The Hague end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

Scheveningen and Duindorp
Paid parking runs from mid-morning to midnight, seven days, with heavier summer enforcement and a wheel clamp on a second check.
Archipelbuurt, Willemspark and the Zeeheldenkwartier
Nineteenth-century streets by the Binnenhof and the Peace Palace: paid parking both sides, tram rails, and the bollarded old core.
Bezuidenhout, Benoordenhout and Mariahoeve
Haagse Hout, served by Laan van N.O.I. and Mariahoeve stations. Wider roads, but rebuilt streets full of shared-stairwell portiek blocks.
Leidschenveen-Ypenburg
Modern stadsdeel beside the British School's two Leidschenveen campuses. Ask whether the goods lift and the ramp take your largest piece.
Kijkduin and Loosduinen
Around the International School on the Wijndaelerweg. Loosduinen is one of the districts the coastal zone reaches into, so look the postcode up.
Wassenaar
Its own gemeente, with the American School and the US Embassy. Blocking part of a lane there needs Wassenaar's own traffic exemption.
Rijswijk and Delft
Separate municipalities. Rijswijk holds the European Patent Office; Delft's whole inner city is camera-controlled and zero-emission.
The road from the UK to The Hague
Route: Eurotunnel to Calais, then motorway across Flanders and the Antwerp ring, joining the A16 and A13 north past Rotterdam and Delft — about 210 miles from Calais.
The whole run is motorway and the Netherlands is entered south of Breda. The last leg, the A13, comes up past Delft and stops short of the city, handing over to the S107 and S100 ring roads. So the final miles are urban, and the hour a vehicle arrives owes more to Randstad traffic than to the distance.

When to move
Prinsjesdag closes the government quarter
The state opening of parliament closes much of the old centre on the third Tuesday in September. An inner ring of streets shuts from early morning and loading is allowed only until ten; the rehearsal closes streets on the Sunday and grandstands go up on the Monday. Keep centre, Willemspark and Voorhout addresses out of that week.
King's Night and King's Day
The ring bounded by the Mauritskade, Prinsessegracht, Kalvermarkt and Hogewal closes to traffic from the evening of 26 April until about five on the morning of the 28th, and cars left inside the festival area after six that first evening are towed out of it. Nothing is delivered in that ring meanwhile.
The Midden holiday region
Zuid-Holland keeps the Midden school calendar, and its summer weeks are when the British School and International School families here tend to move, so ask early if the dates have to sit inside them.
Paperwork once you arrive in The Hague
Where a first registration is made
A first registration from abroad with a residence permit is made in person at the Publiekszaken counter of the Segbroek district office, by appointment. Everyone being registered comes along, babies and grandparents included. The five-day deadline runs from the day you arrive, so the appointment is worth booking before the vehicle is loaded.
The International Centre desk instead
If the IND has classed you as a kennismigrant or a scientific researcher and your employer is a recognised sponsor, you register at The Hague International Centre, a counter shared with the IND, and the registration is completed during the appointment. It serves residents of The Hague, Delft, Leidschendam-Voorburg and Rijswijk; Wassenaar and Voorschoten residents go to their own gemeente.
The letter with your BSN comes later
Confirmation of the registration, carrying the burgerservicenummer, is posted once the council has processed it, usually within about four weeks of the appointment. Goods often travel before that letter exists. Which documents stand in for it while you wait is set out in our customs checker.
Customs when moving to Netherlands
The Dutch Douane grants transfer-of-residence relief on a signed valued inventory plus BSN registration or a rental contract at the destination. Applications are usually processed quickly.

Moving from The Hague back to the UK
People leaving are usually posted on: embassy and institution staff, patent-office and court families, households finishing a British School year. A second-floor portiek collection needs the same lift and the same stair the delivery did. Tell the gemeente before you travel, because The Hague takes the aangifte van vertrek only from five days ahead, and not at all once you have gone.

How long does a removal to The Hague take?

What happens if a car is parked outside my door on the day?
Nothing can be done about it in advance, because The Hague reserves no kerb space for a removal. The vehicle stands as close as it lawfully can, and without paying, while the move is under way; the rest is a carry. So tell us at survey how far the nearest realistic standing place is from your door, and warn the neighbours the week before.
Does the zero-emissiezone apply to a British lorry?
Yes. Dutch zone rules bind a foreign-registered vehicle exactly as a Dutch one, and cameras do the enforcing. A vehicle that does not qualify can buy a day exemption from the RDW, but it counts for one named municipality, cannot be altered or cancelled once bought, and is capped at twelve occasions a year for that city. A job touching Delft as well needs two.
Will my furniture get up the stairs of a portiek flat?
Often not. The porch stair turns tightly between brick walls, and a second-floor flat adds a second enclosed stair behind its own front door, with no lift in the older blocks. The usual answer is an external furniture lift to the window or balcony instead. Photograph the stair, the landing and the window, and bring them to your survey.
Can the lorry wait outside overnight before an early start?
Not at the kerb. A vehicle longer than six metres or higher than two metres forty may stand on a street here only between seven in the morning and six in the evening, Monday to Friday, unless the street is one the city has designated for it. Outside those hours the owner can be fined and the vehicle towed away at their own cost.
My street has rising bollards. What do you need from me?
The cluster letter and the exact address, as early as you can give them. That decides whether the delivery fits a morning window, needs the incidental exemption the city wants six working days ahead, or falls in one of the clusters with no window at all. Say as well whether the street takes a full-size vehicle, because the alternative is a shuttle from wherever one can stand.
Are Wassenaar and Rijswijk treated the same as the city?
No, they are separate municipalities with their own rules. Putting a removal van or a crane on a Wassenaar road so that the road is partly closed needs that gemeente's own traffic exemption, which it prefers four weeks ahead. Rijswijk publishes no removal-specific page at all. Give us the exact address at survey rather than the town.
