Applying for the Haltverbot
The order comes from the Mobilitätsreferat's Temporäre Anordnungen unit at Implerstraße 9, by online form, e-mail or post, and the city quotes ten working days to process it. Munich supplies no signs: whoever holds the order hires them, puts them out and takes them away afterwards. They must be standing by the fourth day before the zone begins.
The Vornotierungsliste, and cars in your zone
If cars sit in a valid zone on the day, the police are called on 110 and a patrol decides whether towing is possible. They want the original order and a Vornotierungsliste — a list, written when the signs went up, of every vehicle already parked there, with registration, make, colour and the position of the kerb-side front wheel's valve.
Most inner streets are resident-parking zones
Munich runs more than eighty Parklizenzgebiete, a count the city stamped in early 2024 and has added to since. Inside one, the kerb is either resident-only or a Mischparken arrangement where visitors pay. That is why a no-stopping order is effectively compulsory rather than optional: without one there is no lawful space at the door.
A green sticker is not always enough
The zone takes in the Mittlerer Ring and everything within it, and Munich goes further than the sticker: diesel vehicles of Euro 4/IV and worse are barred from it until further notice, green Plakette or not. Euro 5 and newer are let in, and a vehicle on foreign plates is judged by the same emission class as a German one.
Altstadt delivery windows
The Altstadt pedestrian zone opens to frontage deliveries only inside set windows. On Kaufingerstraße, Marienplatz and Theatinerstraße vehicles up to seven and a half tonnes may enter from late evening until the middle of the morning; around the Viktualienmarkt and Frauenplatz the window runs later. Schützenstraße differs again. Outside those hours, or above that weight, the Kreisverwaltungsreferat must issue a Zufahrtserlaubnis.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Munich end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

Haidhausen
About two thirds of its houses pre-date 1914. The Franzosenviertel has broad boulevards; behind them run lanes of tiny Herbergshäuser, like An der Kreppe.

Solln and Neu-Solln

Neuperlach and Fasangarten
The European School Munich's campuses. The city calls Neuperlach Germany's largest satellite town; Quiddestraße and Heinrich-Lübke-Straße are notably wide.
Starnberg
Home to Munich International School at Schloss Buchhof, on the lake south-west of the city. A separate town in its own Landkreis, not a Munich district.
Haimhausen
The Bavarian International School's main campus sits on Hauptstrasse. A village municipality north of the city, where the Gemeinde is the road-traffic authority.
Garching and Unterhaching
ESO's headquarters stand on the Garching research campus, north-east of the city. Unterhaching asks for its no-parking application at least four weeks ahead.
The road from the UK to Munich
Route: Eurotunnel to Calais, then either the A26 and A4 through Reims and Strasbourg to the German A8, or the A3 and A9 past Cologne and Nuremberg — about 610 miles from Calais.
Neither approach crosses an Alpine pass or a tolled tunnel, so the run is motorway throughout: Reims and Strasbourg onto the German A8, or Cologne, Frankfurt and Nuremberg on the A3 and A9. Which of the two a vehicle takes is settled before it leaves Calais, because they part company there.

When to move
The Theresienwiese cordon in late September
For sixteen days from mid-September the Theresienwiese is cordoned off. Only entitled residents, visitors and suppliers pass the outer ring; Bavariaring and Theresienhöhe close to normal traffic, Schwanthalerstraße is barriered at peak times, and parking enforcement in the surrounding resident zones tightens, with towing. Expect this every year: a move in Ludwigsvorstadt or Schwanthalerhöhe wants an early start and a confirmed order.
Saturdays in high summer, on both approaches
Both roads into Munich are on the Ferienreiseverordnung's summer Saturday list: the A 8 from Autobahndreieck Karlsruhe as far as München-Obermenzing, the A 9 down to München-Schwabing, and the A 99 ring around the city. Whichever way a vehicle comes, it meets the list somewhere.
Bavarian holidays the rest of the route does not keep
Bavaria closes on days much of Germany works: Epiphany, Corpus Christi, All Saints, and in Munich the Assumption on the fifteenth of August. The Bürgerbüros and the permit desk shut on each; of the four, only Corpus Christi and All Saints are named on the federal lorry ban's own holiday list. Bavarian school holidays run into mid-September, so family moves cluster in August and early September rather than July.
Paperwork once you arrive in Munich
Registering at a Bürgerbüro
Munich's Bürgerbüros, Ruppertstraße 19 among them, see people by appointment, and the appointment is the thing to book first: the law allows two weeks from moving in. Bring your passport and the landlord's Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, which has to name every person moving in and the move-in date. The confirmation you are handed is what the residence-permit desk then asks to see.
The residence-permit desk
In Munich the desk is the Servicestelle für Zuwanderung und Einbürgerung, on the same Ruppertstraße block as the Bürgerbüro but a separate office with appointments of its own. Treat it as an errand for the weeks after the move rather than the week of it, and book it the moment the flat is confirmed. This is general information, not immigration advice.
If you bring a car
Changing the address on your vehicle documents is a separate step, taken after the Anmeldung: the registration confirmation is the document that desk asks to see. A car kept in a Parklizenzgebiet needs a resident parking licence of its own, applied for from the city rather than from the landlord or the building.
Customs when moving to Germany
Germany requires the Zollamt Übersiedlungsgut declaration for transfer-of-residence relief, with a signed valued inventory and an Anmeldung (residence registration) or proof of a tenancy at the destination address.

Moving from Munich back to the UK
Leaving Munich ends the resident parking licence with the address it was issued against. Deregistering — Wohnsitz abmelden — can be done by post, including from abroad once you have gone. The Abmeldebestätigung that follows is what German banks, insurers and the broadcasting fee office ask for before they will close an account.

Who applies for the Haltverbot, and how far ahead?
Anyone may apply — the form's first field is 'Firma oder Vor- und Zuname', so a resident, a mover or a sign-hire firm can be the applicant. Munich quotes ten working days to process it, so count backwards from the date and allow extra if the application travels by post rather than through the online form.
Can a furniture lift stand in the street outside my Munich flat?
Normally yes, if there is room — but plan the ground it stands on. A Haltverbot covers loading and unloading only, and Munich's application form says a work site or other special use of public ground needs its own permit, so the reserved length has to allow for the lift too. Measure the frontage of the house and the width of the pavement before the survey.
Does a removal lorry have to take the A99 around Munich?
No, not if it is delivering to a Munich address. The city diverts lorry through-traffic over three and a half tonnes onto the A99 motorway ring, signed with 'Lieferverkehr frei'; its own wording exempts goods traffic with its source or destination in Munich. A vehicle merely passing the city — heading for Starnberg or Garching from the north — belongs on the ring.
Where can a removal lorry wait overnight in Munich?
Not in the street outside your flat. Munich's rule is that vehicles over seven and a half tonnes, and trailers over two tonnes, may not regularly park in residential areas between ten at night and six in the morning, or on Sundays and public holidays. That is why the reserved slot, and not the evening before it, is what the day is planned around.
What if my new address is outside the city boundary?
A different authority handles it. Starnberg, Unterhaching, Pullach and Garching are separate municipalities with their own road-traffic desks, forms and notice periods — Starnberg asks for two weeks, Unterhaching for at least four. Munich's Mobilitätsreferat has no say beyond the city boundary, and neither do its Altstadt delivery windows. Tell us the exact address at survey.
