Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Frankfurt
Gutleutstraße takes the application
The Straßenverkehrsamt on Gutleutstraße takes the application by e-mail or in person, and issues a verkehrsrechtliche Anordnung for the length of kerb asked for. It wants the request a clear fortnight ahead of the moving date, and allows itself up to two weeks again to work through what arrives.
Three full days of signs
Once the order is granted, the signs have to stand three full calendar days before the move for the reservation to be enforceable. That sits on top of the fortnight the office wants for the application itself, so a date fixed at short notice is very often a date with no reserved kerb at the other end.
The office holds no signs
The Straßenverkehrsamt owns no traffic signs and will not put any out. They are hired from a site-safety or removals firm, and some such firms hold a Jahresgenehmigung, an annual permit that saves them applying case by case. Where a permanent no-stopping restriction already runs outside the address, an Ausnahmegenehmigung applies instead.
The Umweltzone is the motorway ring
Frankfurt's low-emission zone fills the area inside the Autobahnring — the A5 to the west, the A3 to the south, the A661 east and north. The motorways themselves are excluded, so a lorry may pass the city on them carrying no sticker at all. The moment it turns off for a city address it is inside, and the green Plakette binds foreign plates and goods vehicles alike.
Resident parking covers most of the inner city
The Straßenverkehrsamt runs numbered resident-parking areas across the Altstadt, Bahnhofsviertel, Bockenheim, Westend, Nordend, Ostend, Bornheim, Sachsenhausen, Niederrad and Höchst. Each is signed only where you enter and leave it, though the rules hold throughout. Anyone without a resident permit pays at a machine or in an app, and a ticket reserves no particular length of kerb.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Frankfurt end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

The Messe sits between the two, so Book Fair week fills the approach roads and every hotel anywhere near them.
Altstadt and Römerberg
Market stalls take the streets around the Römerberg for a month before Christmas, and a lorry may not reach the door at all.
Praunheim
The European School Frankfurt am Main is on Praunheimer Weg, out on the north-western edge of the city.
Oberursel (Taunus)
Frankfurt International School's main campus is here, on Alfred-Lechler-Straße and An der Waldlust, past the city boundary.
The road from the UK to Frankfurt
Route: Eurotunnel to Calais, the A16 and E40 through Flanders and the Brussels ring, then the A4 past Aachen and Cologne and the A3 south — about 380 miles from Calais.
Nothing on this routing touches the Netherlands. The German Maut picks up at Aachen and starts above three and a half tonnes, so a small van pays nothing to enter the country and a lorry is metered from the border on. The A3 hands over to the A66 for the last miles in.

When to move
October is the month to work around
The Frankfurter Buchmesse runs 7 to 11 October 2026, filling the hotels and loading the Messe approaches in Bockenheim and the Westend. The Frankfurt Marathon follows on Sunday 25 October and closes roads right across the city. Hessen's autumn school holidays, 5 to 17 October, sit across the middle of it.
The Christmas market takes the Altstadt kerb
From 23 November to 22 December 2026 the market occupies the Römerberg, Paulsplatz, the Hauptwache and the Rossmarkt, and closes a ring of streets around them. The Mainkai is shut between the Alte Brücke and the Untermainbrücke. For an address in or beside that ring it is the one month when no permit will get a lorry to the door.
Fronleichnam counts here, Reformationstag does not
The Sunday and holiday ban on lorries over seven and a half tonnes runs from midnight until ten at night, and the holidays that trigger it are listed state by state. Fronleichnam, a moveable feast in late May or June, is on the Hessen list. Reformationstag, which stops lorries further north, is an ordinary working day here. Hessen's summer break runs 28 June to 6 August 2027.
Paperwork once you arrive in Frankfurt
Your Anmeldung, and the certificate everything asks for
In Frankfurt registering means an appointment at a Bürgeramt, and what you leave with is a Meldebescheinigung; the deadline is a fortnight from the move-in date. That certificate is the document your customs file wants as proof that the address has actually changed, so book the appointment before the load is cleared rather than after.
Where a sticker is bought here
Stickers are sold at recognised test centres, at garages authorised to do emissions tests, at vehicle registration offices and at Frankfurt's own Bürgerämter, so one can be had on the same errand as the registration appointment. Each is issued against a single registration plate and printed with it, so it cannot be moved to another car or reused after a windscreen is replaced.
Customs when moving to Germany
Germany requires the Zollamt Übersiedlungsgut declaration for transfer-of-residence relief, with a signed valued inventory and an Anmeldung (residence registration) or proof of a tenancy at the destination address.

Moving from Frankfurt back to the UK
A move out of Frankfurt is usually a secondment ending rather than a house being sold, so the date is fixed by an employer's calendar and known months ahead. The Abmeldung is only required if you are taking no other German address; an internal move is handled by re-registering instead, and the Bürgeramt does both at the same counter.

How long does a removal to Frankfurt take?

Is Frankfurt's Umweltzone still in force?
Yes. The federal register still lists the Frankfurt zone as active, with no abolition date against it, and the city's own boundary page is unchanged. There is no diesel driving ban here either: the route bans reported after the 2018 court case were never brought in, and the city publishes none.
What exactly is a verkehrsrechtliche Anordnung?
It is the traffic order itself — the written decision from the Straßenverkehrsamt that turns your stretch of kerb into a no-stopping zone for the day. It is not the signs. The order permits them; hiring them and putting them out is a separate job on its own timetable. Keep the order at the address on the day, because it is the paper an officer asks to see.
My new address is in Oberursel or Offenbach — is that the same permit?
No. German law leaves the order with the road traffic authority of the municipality where the vehicle will stand, so a Frankfurt permit stops at the city boundary. Oberursel, Bad Homburg, Eschborn, Neu-Isenburg and Kronberg each grant their own, on their own form and timetable. Offenbach is an independent city across the Main, and runs a low-emission zone of its own as well.
What happens if a car is parked in my reserved zone on the day?
The order and the Beweisliste come out. Frankfurt's Straßenverkehrsamt runs a road-safety telephone line for exactly this and sends a patrol. Without the Beweisliste — the written list of plates standing in the marked length when the signs went up — there is nothing to show the car arrived after the signs, and towing cannot be justified. Keep both papers at the address.
Where does an external furniture lift stand in a Frankfurt street?
In the length the order reserves, which is why the order has to be asked for long enough at the outset. The German words are Möbelaufzug or Außenlift: a lift worked through an upper window or balcony instead of the stairs. Say at your survey what else will have to stand in that reserved length.
