An express route opened in June
Kerb space is held by an Ausnahmegenehmigung — in practice a Haltverbot, the German term for a temporary no-stopping zone — filed at Auf'm Hennekamp. The counter asks for the paperwork about a fortnight before the date, an express route for shorter notice opened on 1 June 2026, and anything arriving inside two working days is refused outright.
Who sets the boards out, and for how long
The Amt issues the permission; setting the boards out is somebody else's job. Its notice sends the applicant to a removal firm or a Baustellen-Service traffic-sign contractor, and sets no restriction on who may file. The federal administrative court settled the standing time on a Düsseldorf removal: a car parked before mobile boards go up may be towed at its owner's expense only where they have stood three full days.
Umweltzone Düsseldorf, street by street
The green Feinstaubplakette is the only way into the zone, and a foreign plate changes nothing: one sticker, once issued, serves every German Umweltzone. Düsseldorf's Straßenverkehrsamt issues it for vehicles registered abroad and posts it out of the country, reading the emission group from item 14.1 of the registration certificate, the V5C on a British vehicle. The boundary is a published street list, so check yours.
The Altstadt opens early, then closes
Vehicles may enter the Altstadt pedestrian zones to unload from five in the morning until half past eleven, Monday to Friday, and until nine on a Saturday. The Mühlenstraße approach towards Burgplatz has had rising bollards since April 2025. Outside those hours a chip card lowers them, and anyone without one rings the round-the-clock traffic control centre on the number posted at the bollard.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Düsseldorf end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

Stübben's planned quarter, protected whole since 1992: four-storey blocks along the Rhine, three inland, timber stairs, trams down Luegallee.
Niederkassel and Lörick
The Japanese International School stands on Niederkasseler Kirchweg. Both are named resident-parking areas, so the kerb is spoken for before you arrive.
Kaiserswerth
The International School of Düsseldorf is on Niederrheinstraße. Lanes around the Stiftsplatz are tight, and this is a resident-parking area too.
Düsseltal and the Zooviertel
The Lycée Français International Simone Veil is on Graf-Recke-Straße. Düsseltal is not one of the forty-four named resident-parking areas.
Immermannstraße and Klosterstraße
The city counts more than 8,400 Japanese residents and nearly 600 Japanese firms in the wider area; the quarter clusters on these two streets.
Neuss
ISR's main campus is on Konrad-Adenauer-Ring. A separate city, with its own permit office and its own low-emission zone.
Meerbusch
A separate town in Rhein-Kreis Neuss, where a Düsseldorf permission counts for nothing and the road office works to its own notice period.
Ratingen and Angermund
Ratingen is in Kreis Mettmann and runs its own no-stopping procedure. Angermund is the northern edge, nearest the British school in Duisburg.
The road from the UK to Düsseldorf
Route: Folkestone to Calais on the shuttle, then Ghent, the Antwerp ring and the A67 to Venlo, entering Germany on the A61 and A52 — about 250 miles from Calais.
The Kennedytunnel under the Scheldt on the Antwerp ring and the Eindhoven junctions are where this run loses its time, and both back up long before the German border. The A52 lands west of the Rhine, on the left bank, so a right-bank address adds a crossing at the very end of the journey.

When to move
Carnival shuts the middle of the city
On carnival Sunday the Königsallee closes to traffic from six in the morning. On Rosenmontag the closures come in three waves from quarter past six, the last of them taking in the whole parade route through the centre and the Altstadt. The dates move with Easter, so check the city's announcement for your own year rather than assuming February.
The Rheinkirmes takes the left bank
For ten days in the second half of July the Größte Kirmes am Rhein fills the Oberkassel meadows. Residential streets behind eleven staffed entry points are closed to general traffic through the afternoon and evening, badly parked cars are towed, and the Oberkasseler and Rheinknie bridges shut briefly for the drone show and fireworks.
The Sunday exemption list, and the school break
Düsseldorf's own Sunday and holiday transport exemption lists ten grounds — food supply, port operations, utilities, event supply and the rest — and a household move is not among them. The state keeps Fronleichnam and All Saints' Day when England does not, and its school summer break opened on 20 July in 2026 and opens on 19 July in 2027.
Paperwork once you arrive in Düsseldorf
Your Anmeldung, by appointment only
Düsseldorf registers new arrivals at a Bürgerbüro, and the slot has to be booked before you turn up. The earliest it can be done is the day you actually move in, never ahead of it, and the federal deadline is two weeks from then. Take a passport and the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung your landlord signs. Where your main home stays abroad the city applies a later rule instead, so ask the counter.
The Ausländerbehörde on Erkrather Straße
British citizens may travel over without a visa and apply for a residence permit after arriving, through the Kommunale Ausländerbehörde on Erkrather Straße, which runs an online service. Work may not begin until a permit expressly allowing it has been issued, and the German missions in the UK warn processing can run into months. Check your own position with them before fixing a date.
The Expat Service Desk
Düsseldorf runs an Expat Service Desk jointly with Kreis Mettmann and the chamber of commerce, advising arriving staff on work and residence permits, registration, housing and schooling. It also keeps the list of the area's international schools, which is worth reading before the district is chosen rather than after the lease is signed.
Customs when moving to Germany
Germany requires the Zollamt Übersiedlungsgut declaration for transfer-of-residence relief, with a signed valued inventory and an Anmeldung (residence registration) or proof of a tenancy at the destination address.

No. The crossing between Golzheim and Heerdt has been barred to anything heavier than three and a half tonnes since 1 February 2026, with no end date, and a roadside lidar trailer has enforced it since that month. The city's signed diversions take heavier traffic round from the Kaarst interchange, or over the Rheinkniebrücke from the Kennedydamm and the Rheinufertunnel.
Is my street one of Düsseldorf's resident-parking areas?
Quite possibly: the city lists forty-four of them, Oberkassel-Ost and Oberkassel-West, Niederkassel, Unterbilk, Friedrichstadt, Altstadt, Altstadt-Nord, Pempelforter Straße and Kaiserswerth among them. In those streets every bay at the kerb belongs to a permit holder, so the reserved zone is the only ground a lorry can claim. The city publishes the list with its abbreviation codes, so you can check your own street against it.
My Oberkassel flat is on the fourth floor with no lift. What happens?
A Möbellift, the external lift that works from the street, needs kerb space of its own, and it comes out of the same no-stopping permission as the lorry's. The 1898 building code allowed four storeys by the Rhine and three further inland, and the 1992 protection order has kept those blocks much as they were, timber stairwells included. Say which window opens widest.
Which office grants the parking permission for Meerbusch, Neuss or Ratingen?
Each town's own, on its own terms. Meerbusch has supplied no signs since 2022, so a specialist firm must set them, and it wants the application about a fortnight ahead. Neuss requires the boards to be effectively in place four days before they bite. Ratingen wants fourteen days' notice and three full days of signs. A Düsseldorf permission is no use in any of them.
