Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Stuttgart
Ordering the Halteverbotszone
Stuttgart calls the reserved kerb a Halteverbotszone, ordered from the Amt für öffentliche Ordnung through the team that handles street works in the districts, and filed through the state's own online portal. The city asks for it at least two weeks before the moving date. Start as soon as the date is fixed, because the signs go out days earlier still.
Every registration in the space, written down
Whoever erects the signs — the permit holder, or a specialist firm commissioned to — must write down the registration of every car already parked in the space, and they must stand at least three full calendar days before the zone takes effect. Without that list a car blocking the zone cannot be towed, and towing becomes possible only on the fourth day. The council does none of it.
One sticker, and the whole city inside the line
The Umweltzone here is not a district or a ring road but the entire city area, so a vehicle is inside it from the boundary sign onwards and there is no edge to check an address against. Every car and lorry needs the green Umweltplakette. Keepers of foreign vehicles can ask for one by e-mail in advance, or call at the nearest Zulassungsstelle after the border.
A second ban, on older diesels
On top of the sticker, Stuttgart bars older diesels. One ban covers the whole city area; a stricter inner one, the kleine Umweltzone, takes in the Talkessel and the districts of Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen. Three signed corridors stay open through it, the B10 and the B27a past Kornwestheim among them. Both bans were still in force when this page was checked.
Old-building quarters, and the ways in
Stuttgart-West was built up around shared courtyards in the second half of the nineteenth century, and the slopes above it from 1920. In Heslach the lanes are village-narrow, and steep ravines called Klingen cut across the southern hillsides. A lift to a window from the street is often the only way in. Tell us how much of that carry is uphill and how much of it is steps.

Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Stuttgart end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. Stuttgart-West
The city calls it one of Germany's most densely populated quarters; it is framed by the Karlshöhe, Hasenberg and Kräherwald. Resident parking throughout.
Stuttgart-Süd, Heslach and the Heusteigviertel
Big-city Gründerzeit streets run into village lanes here. Marienplatz is where the Zacke rack railway starts its climb towards Degerloch.
Bad Cannstatt
The largest and oldest of the Stadtbezirke, eighteen Stadtteile, a town in its own right until 1905. The Wasen festival ground sits along the Neckar.
Degerloch and Sillenbuch
The International School of Stuttgart has its main campus on Sigmaringer Straße. The plateau is reached from the basin by the long Neue Weinsteige climb.
Vaihingen and Möhringen
Patch Barracks and Kelley Barracks stand here, so English is widely spoken. Both sit on the Filder plateau, reached without dropping into the basin.
Sindelfingen and Böblingen
A second International School campus, and the garrison's schools at Panzer Kaserne. Sindelfingen issues its own traffic order for the kerb.
Fellbach
The SIS Swiss International School is on Schmidener Weg. The town issues its own order and neither supplies nor erects the signs.
Esslingen am Neckar
Much of the medieval core is pedestrian zone, open to deliveries only in signed morning and evening windows. Half-timbered houses, cobbles, hand-carry.
The road from the UK to Stuttgart
Route: Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais, the A26 and A4 by Reims and Metz, then Alsace and the A5 to Karlsruhe, and the A8 east — about 480 miles from Calais.
Both motorway approaches are building sites. The A8 is being widened across the Enz valley at Pforzheim, with staged full closures to lift in new bridge decks. On the A81 from the north, the Engelbergbasistunnel at Leonberg runs on narrowed lanes with no hard shoulder, and its east tube shuts at night.

When to move
The Volksfest on the Wasen
The Cannstatter Volksfest runs from the twenty-fifth of September to the eleventh of October in 2026 and draws more than three million people to the Wasen. Bad Cannstatt and the Neckar approaches are busy throughout. The Frühlingsfest uses the same ground from mid-April to early May. Pick dates either side if your address is nearby.
Epiphany, and the summer Saturdays
Baden-Württemberg keeps Epiphany on 6 January, which most German states do not, so the counters shut on a January working day England keeps — though the Sunday and holiday driving ban does not count it. Fronleichnam and All Saints it does count, here. Through July and August the Saturday ban reaches the A81 between Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and Gärtringen.
School holidays run late here
Baden-Württemberg breaks up late: the 2026 summer holiday runs from the thirtieth of July to the twelfth of September, so family arrivals bunch into August and the first days of September. The state also takes a two-week Whitsun break in May, which has no English equivalent. International schools set their own calendars, so check yours before fixing a date.
Paperwork once you arrive in Stuttgart
Registering the address
Any Stuttgart Bürgerbüro will do, whichever district you live in, though the city's own page still lists three as closed, so check which are open before you set out. Bring your passport and the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, the signed confirmation the landlord gives you with the keys. German law allows two weeks from the day you move in.
The Ausländerbehörde queue
Stuttgart's Ausländerbehörde takes residence-permit applications online, and warns on its own pages that very long processing times must be expected. Chasing a case does not move it. Do not hang your delivery date on holding a residence card. A UK driving licence may be used for six months after the move, and the exchange is applied for before that runs out.
Parking for your own car
A Bewohnerparkausweis, the resident parking permit, is valid only in the sub-zone you are registered in, so it follows the Anmeldung rather than the moving day. Until then the meter applies to your own car like anyone else's. If that car is an older diesel, check the ban map before you drive it in: the delivery exception does not cover private cars.
Customs when moving to Germany
Germany requires the Zollamt Übersiedlungsgut declaration for transfer-of-residence relief, with a signed valued inventory and an Anmeldung (residence registration) or proof of a tenancy at the destination address.

Moving from Stuttgart back to the UK
Stuttgart's outward moves often follow the garrison's own rotation, so the dates are known a long way ahead. The Abmeldung is the piece people forget: the confirmation it produces is posted abroad only if you ask for it at the counter, and asking afterwards from another country is a slow business.

Who can apply for the Halteverbotszone in Stuttgart?
Whoever will be answerable on the ground. Stuttgart's service page is addressed to the person moving, and it does not say whether a company registered abroad may be the applicant; the application pack also asks for a named person responsible for traffic safety at the zone. Settle early who will be named on it, because that person carries the duty for as long as the signs stand.
Is a removal lorry allowed through the diesel ban?
Not settled, and worth checking for your own vehicle. The bans except geschäftsmäßiger Lieferverkehr — commercial delivery traffic — by the signage itself, so no individual permit is needed for that; but the city's exemption page defines it as carrying goods to traders or customers, and nowhere mentions removals. The city publishes a map showing which streets fall inside the stricter inner zone.
Can a lorry drive through the middle of Stuttgart?
Not as through traffic. Vehicles over three and a half tonnes are barred from crossing the city inside a ring drawn by the A8, the A81, the northern and eastern city limits and the B10 and B313, though the B10 itself stays open along its whole length. A journey that loads or unloads inside the ring falls outside the ban, and the driver proves it to the police with an order or a delivery note. No certificate is issued for it.
My flat is at the top of a Stäffele. Can you still deliver?
Yes, but only on foot from the nearest kerb a vehicle may use. The city's staircases add up to roughly twenty kilometres of steps between the valley floor and the half-height slopes, and no permit changes that. Count the steps and measure the distance from that kerb before a date is fixed.
Where can the lorry legally stand while we unload?
Only in the reserved zone, or somewhere the signs already allow. Ten Stuttgart districts run resident parking, and on-street space there is chargeable Monday to Saturday for anyone without a permit, with the City zone limited to an hour. Putting bins out to hold a space has no legal effect and other drivers may ignore it. A pedestrian zone needs its own exemption.
Does a Ludwigsburg or Sindelfingen address change the kerb permit?
Yes. Each municipality runs its own procedure and its own lead times. Ludwigsburg wants the application fourteen days ahead for addresses in the town itself and will not process a late one, with the signs up four working days before. Sindelfingen asks for the signs seventy-two hours ahead. Fellbach neither supplies nor erects them. Esslingen's old town adds signed delivery windows. Name the municipality when you book, not just the postcode.
