Nothing requires one. Berlin's building code asks for a lift only above four storeys, and not where a top floor was converted or added later, so fourth- and fifth-floor walk-ups are ordinary in the Altbau districts. The usual answer is a Schrägaufzug, an external furniture lift worked through a window or balcony; Berlin street land needs a special-use permit for one, which is a separate application from the Haltverbot.

It depends on the street, not the district. The zone follows the inner S-Bahn ring, but parts of the southern city motorway and the Elsenbrücke inside it are excluded, and Kanzowstraße in Prenzlauer Berg sits outside the ring yet inside the zone. The Senate publishes an address-search map and a postcode table; several Prenzlauer Berg, Moabit and Schöneberg postcodes are only partly in.

In practice no. Berlin grants individual exemptions only to severely disabled people on low incomes and to a few special vehicles that cannot be retrofitted, with a DEKRA or TÜV certificate to prove it; garage certificates are not accepted. An exemption issued for another German Umweltzone does not apply here.

Northbound, lorries cannot use that stretch. Since March 2025 the single northbound lane at the Funkturm interchange runs on the opposite carriageway and is open only to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, so anything heavier bypasses the section between Messedamm and Spandauer Damm. Southbound keeps two lanes. The replacement bridge is planned for summer 2027. It affects approaches from the AVUS towards Charlottenburg, Westend, Moabit and Wedding.

Not without an exemption. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg forbids motor vehicles in the Lausitzer Platz pedestrian zone without permission, allows no parking there at all, and grants moving exemptions only on a strict test, with the applicant showing why the extra carrying distance is unreasonable. The original permit, hologram and all, must be readable behind the windscreen, and walking pace applies.
