Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Hamburg
The kerb space is granted by a police station
A lorry may not simply stop in a Hamburg street. The reserved space is a Halteverbotszone, a temporary no-stopping order, and the traffic authority that grants it sits inside the Polizeikommissariat covering your street rather than at the Bezirksamt. It is applied for in writing, and the authority wants that at least two weeks before the move.
Four days of signs before the space is yours
The city asks for the signs to be standing at least four days before the zone is used, which is what makes it lawful to have a car moved out of it. Hamburg's police leaflet also wants a written note made at set-up of the date, the time and the vehicles already parked there. Rope, tape, boxes or chairs across a bay count for nothing.
Pavement bays are closed to a removal vehicle
Where a Hamburg street is signed for half-on-pavement parking, only vehicles up to 2.8 tonnes may use those bays, so anything bigger stands out on the carriageway and takes a running lane with it. Ottensen, Altona-Nord, Eimsbüttel, Harvestehude, Eppendorf, Uhlenhorst and St. Georg also sit inside Landesbetrieb Verkehr resident-parking districts, where everyone else buys a ticket and leaves within the maximum stay.
Ottensen is being rebuilt as a car-reduced quarter
Bezirksamt Altona is turning Ottensen's core shopping streets — parts of Ottenser Hauptstraße, Bahrenfelder Straße and Große Rainstraße — into an autoarmes Quartier, a car-reduced quarter. Retractable bollards are to control who drives in, within time windows the district is still settling, and delivery traffic is sent to marked loading zones. Say so at survey if your new address is in those streets.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Hamburg end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

The road from the UK to Hamburg
Route: Eurotunnel to Calais, the E40 and E17 across Flanders, the A67 past Eindhoven, then the A1 north through Bremen — about 470 miles from Calais.
The Dutch leg is the newest cost on this run: the Netherlands now charges goods vehicles over 3,500 kilograms by the kilometre on nearly all its motorways, and a lorry without a working on-board unit risks a fine. Bremen is the last large interchange before the A1 runs into the city.

When to move
The Hafengeburtstag shuts the harbour each May
Every May the port anniversary closes wide areas around the harbour for a long weekend. No driving at all is allowed on the event ground, and deliveries outside the short window either side of the event need the police commissioner's authorisation. Parking anywhere near it is scarce. Moves in St. Pauli-Süd, Neustadt and western HafenCity are the ones caught.
Reformationstag is a lorry-free day here
Hamburg counts 31 October, Reformationstag, among the public holidays on which a lorry over seven and a half tonnes may not work. Landesbetrieb Verkehr can lift the Sunday and holiday ban, but only for urgent loads such as fresh food or medicine, and a household removal is not among them.
Elbtunnel weekends
The A7 through the Elbtunnel is being widened, and Autobahn GmbH takes it out from a Friday night to a Monday morning several times a year, publishing the weekends well in advance. None fall in July or August. It bites hardest on Altona, Ottensen, Blankenese and the western Elbe suburbs, so a date there is worth checking against the published list.
Paperwork once you arrive in Hamburg
Registering the address: your Anmeldung
Everyone in the household attends in person, at one of the Hamburg Service residents' offices around the city, taking passports and the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung — the landlord's written confirmation that you have moved in. Anyone arriving from abroad has two weeks from moving in to get it done. The office issues a Meldebestätigung, and almost everything afterwards asks to see it.
British certificates need an apostille
Birth and marriage certificates travel separately from the load, and in originals. Hamburg's registration service asks for foreign civil-status documents to carry an apostille or a legalisation, with a certified translation where one is needed. Getting that done in the UK before the papers are packed is a great deal easier than arranging it afterwards from Hamburg.
The Welcome Center on Süderstraße
Residence matters for professionals and their families are handled here by the Hamburg Welcome Center for Professionals on Süderstraße, which sees people by appointment only and is not one of the residents' offices where the address itself is registered. They are two separate bookings in two separate buildings.
Customs when moving to Germany
Germany requires the Zollamt Übersiedlungsgut declaration for transfer-of-residence relief, with a signed valued inventory and an Anmeldung (residence registration) or proof of a tenancy at the destination address.

Moving from Hamburg back to the UK
Leaving goes back to the same counter, and what it hands over is an official Meldebestätigung naming the date you left. Keep it. A transfer-of-residence claim to HMRC is evidenced with proof of having lived abroad, and the claim is made before the load travels rather than after it lands.

Who grants the parking space for a removal in Hamburg?
The Straßenverkehrsbehörde, which in Hamburg sits inside the Polizeikommissariate, the police stations, rather than at the Bezirksamt. Plenty of removal websites say otherwise; the police and the city's own service page do not. Anyone applying on your behalf needs your written authority alongside the application, so that is worth sorting out early.
Do I need an Umweltplakette to move to Hamburg?
No. Hamburg has no low-emission zone, so no German windscreen sticker is needed to drive into the city, and the two Altona diesel street bans, on Max-Brauer-Allee and Stresemannstraße, ended in 2023. Commercial sticker sites still list those bans as live and a dealer page claims a new zone is coming; the city's own service page says there is none. A sticker can still be compulsory elsewhere in Germany.
My new flat is in an old Hamburg apartment block. What should I tell you?
How the stairwell turns, and what the lift will really hold. The sought-after inner districts are built up in Altbau, pre-war apartment blocks whose staircases were never meant for a wardrobe, and Winterhude and Barmbek add Schumacher's 1920s brick with narrower landings again. Measure the tightest turn and the doorway before anything is booked.
Can you deliver in the Blankenese Treppenviertel?
Yes, with planning. Most houses in the Treppenviertel reach the road only by stairways, some 5,000 steps across the quarter, and even the public bus there is a nimble minibus. Nothing on wheels reaches many of the doors, so the carry is on foot from the nearest road a vehicle may legally stand in. A survey before the date is not optional at this address.
Is a move to Norderstedt or Buxtehude handled the same way?
No. Those towns lie outside the Hamburg city-state, in Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, so the police procedure used inside Hamburg stops at the boundary and a different desk, a different form and a different notice period take over. Norderstedt and Wedel are the nearest of them, and each publishes its own.
What is different about delivering into HafenCity?
HafenCity stands on a Warft, an artificial mound: the streets are raised to about eight metres above mean sea level and each building sits on a watertight base instead of a cellar. Storm surges flood the quayside promenades roughly twice a year without reaching the raised streets. Four road bridges carry traffic in. Ask the building management about the goods lift when you take the flat.
