Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Rotterdam
The kerb is metered, not reserved
No Rotterdam procedure reserves a space for a removal van, and the city's own moving page is about address registration and nothing else. A vehicle at the kerb pays street parking by number plate, and a scanauto, a camera car, reads plates as it passes. Paid hours run late into the evening, and later still in the centre on Friday and Saturday.
A furniture lift is an object on the road
Rotterdam names verhuisliften alongside scaffolds, cranes and cherry pickers on its road-use permit page, so the lift that reaches a third-floor window is the part of the day that needs permission. Under a day needs no permit where traffic is not hindered, but inside a paid-parking area a permit is always required, whatever the duration. The council allows itself up to eight weeks to decide.
Who is able to make the application
Every Rotterdam permit that touches a move is applied for with DigiD, the Dutch citizen login, or the business equivalent eHerkenning. Neither is open to a UK company, so the application is made by the person moving in, once they hold a Dutch login, or by a Dutch business acting for them. Say early whether your street needs one: the decision period runs from the day it is lodged.
The zero-emissiezone, and its edge
The zone covers business vans and lorries, not private cars, and the municipality describes its extent only as the area inside the ring — the boundary is on the city's map. It has been in force since 2025 for the oldest emission classes and tightens by stages after that, so the answer for a given vehicle changes with the year as well as the address.
Three rules that are not the zone
Lorries that are not fully electric may not use the 's-Gravendijkwal in Rotterdam-West, and a foreign plate has to be registered once with the municipality before it can ask for that particular permission. The Maastunnel takes nothing taller than three metres ninety. On the Maastunneltraverse between Zuidplein and Bentinckplein the right-hand lane is reserved and camera-enforced. An exemption for one of these is no use against another.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Rotterdam end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

Inside the zone. The Binnenrotte market fills its square on Tuesdays and Saturdays, so a delivery to those streets is planned around the stalls.
Blijdorp and Bergpolder
1930s closed blocks, a ground floor and four storeys above on main streets, upper flats up Haags portiek stairs with no lift.
Kralingen
Villas with drives east of the Kralingse Plas; to the west, four-storey blocks built round collective inner gardens.
Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier and Katendrecht
Converted warehouses and residential towers across the Erasmusbrug. A goods lift and a loading bay usually have to be booked with the building manager.
Delfshaven, Middelland and the Oude Westen
Dense pre-war streets, among the few quarters to survive 1940. The lorry-banned 's-Gravendijkwal cuts through, so a lorry's approach needs checking.
Hillegersberg-Schiebroek
North of the A20 and outside the ring. Houses with gardens, but narrow tree-lined streets that decide the size of vehicle.
Schiedam
Its own town hall, its own application for anything standing on the road, and it sits outside Rotterdam's zone.
The road from the UK to Rotterdam
Route: Dover or Folkestone to Calais, then the E40 to Ghent, the E17 to Antwerp, the E19 to Breda and the A16 over the Van Brienenoord bridge — about 190 miles from Calais.
The last motorway miles cross the Nieuwe Maas, so the approach here is planned by bridge and tunnel rather than by junction. Which crossing a vehicle takes decides which of the city's own vehicle rules it meets before it has reached the street at all.

When to move
Days the centre closes
Three fixtures close central streets for whole days. The NN Marathon Rotterdam starts at the foot of the Erasmusbrug and finishes on the Coolsingel in April, with closures running Friday to Sunday and a warning that badly parked cars are towed. The Zomercarnaval parade takes the centre in late July, and Wereldhavendagen fills the river frontage on the first weekend of September.
The A16 approach is being rebuilt
Rijkswaterstaat is renovating the motorways, bridges and tunnels around the city into the early 2030s, and the A16 between Ridderkerk and the Terbregseplein — the exact approach from Breda — closes for whole weekends at a time. The dates move, so they are worth checking against the agency's planning page before a date is held.
Paperwork once you arrive in Rotterdam
The document check comes before the counter
A first registration in Rotterdam runs in two parts: the documents are checked online, and only then is there an appointment in person. That counter appointment still has to fall inside the five days after arrival, so the online step is worth starting before the move rather than after it.
One appointment at the Weena
The Rotterdam International Center sits in the Groot Handelsgebouw on the Weena, beside Rotterdam Centraal. It runs a single appointment that combines municipal registration for a BSN, collection of an IND residence permit with biometrics, and the opening of a Dutch bank account — three errands that otherwise fall in three different places during the first weeks.
Customs when moving to Netherlands
The Dutch Douane grants transfer-of-residence relief on a signed valued inventory plus BSN registration or a rental contract at the destination. Applications are usually processed quickly.

Moving from Rotterdam back to the UK
Going the other way, the lift and the permit come back: a third-floor collection in Blijdorp or Kralingen meets the same staircase, and anything standing on the road needs the same permit and the same Dutch login. Rotterdam emails a bewijs van uitschrijving once you report the departure, and that is the document dating the move for a transfer-of-residence claim to HMRC.

Do I need a permit to park a removal van in Rotterdam?

Inside a paid-parking area that holds however short the stay, and the application goes through a Dutch login, so it is settled before the date is fixed rather than on the day.
Is my street inside Rotterdam's zero-emission zone?
Look it up on the municipality's zone map. The official description is only the area inside the ring, so an address near the A20, A16, A15 or A4 is worth checking rather than guessing, and districts beyond the ring such as Hillegersberg-Schiebroek fall outside. The ring is a description; the map is what counts.
My Rotterdam flat has no lift — does everything go through the window?
Often, yes. The pre-war walk-ups have narrow internal stairs that wardrobes, sofas and mattresses rarely turn, so the usual answer is a verhuislift, an external furniture lift raised from the street to the window. That is the thing the road-use permit is for, which is why the street matters as much as the staircase. Send photographs of both, and say which floor you are on.
Can a removal lorry reach an address in Rotterdam-West?
Sometimes not by the obvious road. With the 's-Gravendijkwal shut to lorries that are not fully electric, the approach to Delfshaven, Middelland and the Oude Westen has to be worked out from the municipality's map of the affected streets before the vehicle is chosen. A van is not caught by the ban at all, which is often what settles it.
Do the same rules apply in Schiedam or Capelle aan den IJssel?
No. Each neighbouring municipality runs its own procedure for objects on the road, and a Rotterdam permit does not carry over the boundary; Schiedam, next door to the west, has its own application. On the national register of zero-emission zones neither Schiedam nor Capelle aan den IJssel appears, while Delft, The Hague and Gouda do.
