Rated 4.9 on Trustpilot from 185 reviews

Transport and customs documentation for a one-bedroom part load from the UK to Basel cost £2,229 – £2,976, and for a three-bedroom house £4,779 – £6,524. Packing, transit cover and stairs or parking at either end are priced on top, from your own answers. Transit is 4–8 days door to door via Eurotunnel then E17/E25 through France.

The middle of Basel is a motor-vehicle-free Kernzone: goods can be handled there in the morning and not after eleven, and nothing may stand parked in it at any hour. Outside that zone the kerb is held with the cantonal police's own portable no-parking signs, which have to be standing on the street well before the vehicle arrives.

How your quote and booking work

The price you see online is an estimate worked out from your own list. A free survey turns it into a fixed price, and a deposit holds your date. How the price is worked out

Start my Basel quote
  1. Get your estimate — about three minutes

Pick your home size or list what is moving item by item, and watch the vehicle fill as you go. Choose a shared load or a vehicle of your own, tell us about stairs and parking at both ends, and your price appears with every line shown. We ask for your name, email and phone number before we show it, and email you a copy.

  2. Have a free survey, and the price is fixed

Pick a weekday slot online for a video call and walk us round your rooms, or send photos on WhatsApp; near our depots we can visit instead. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Once we have surveyed, we do not revise the price upward on moving day.

  3. Secure your date with a 25% deposit

Before the survey or after it, whichever suits you — online, by card. The deposit holds the vehicle and the date. If the survey changes the price and you would rather not go ahead, you get the full deposit back. Otherwise our terms and conditions set out what we charge if you postpone or cancel.

  4. Sort the paperwork in your own portal

You get a private page for your move: the customs checklist for Switzerland and somewhere to upload each document. If you listed your items one by one, that list is already there — add a rough value to each line and it becomes the valued inventory customs ask for.

  5. Collection in the UK, delivery in Basel

On a shared load you choose the collection day and we give you a delivery window, confirming the day itself once the vehicle has cleared customs. With a vehicle of your own, both dates are yours. The balance is due on the day we collect.

Part-load prices from the UK to Basel

Basel is priced in Zone 3 — central France & Germany. These are indicative part-load bands for the transport and the £320 customs documentation fee. Collection beyond 30 miles of our depots adds a mileage contribution, and packing, access and cover are priced from your own answers — each shows as its own line on your quote.

Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Basel

  • Mobile no-parking signs, ordered from the cantonal police

Kerbside space is held with the Kantonspolizei Basel-Stadt's own portable no-parking signs, the mobile Parkverbotsschilder, ordered online at least eight days ahead. They must be out at least forty-eight hours before the move and no more than five days before it, three vehicle lengths — about fifteen metres — is the normal stretch, and the kerb may be closed for three days at most.

  • The inner-city core zone loads in the morning

In the Kernzone parking and through traffic are barred outright. Güterumschlag, goods handling, needs no permit there from five in the morning until eleven, Monday to Saturday; every other approach is permit-bearing, applied for online through the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle, and the bollards read number plates rather than paperwork. Which side of that line your street falls on decides whether the job is a morning one.

  • Old blocks, and the stairs inside them

More than half the canton's residential buildings pre-date 1946 and about a quarter pre-date 1919; of that older stock, roughly half stands four storeys or higher. The building register counts storeys but records neither staircases nor lifts, so the survey is what settles the carry.

How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Basel end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.

Where we deliver in and around Basel

  • Altstadt Grossbasel

Parts of the district lie inside the motor-vehicle-free core zone, so the job is a morning one or it needs the cantonal access permit.

  • Matthäus, Clara, Rosental and Klybeck

By the canton's own count these Kleinbasel districts hold the largest share of residents without Swiss nationality.

  • Bachletten, Bruderholz and Hirzbrunnen

The same count puts these at the other end of the table, with the smallest foreign-national share in the canton.

  • Riehen and Bettingen

The canton's other two municipalities. The cantonal police's no-parking signs reach both, and stop at the boundary beyond them.

  • Binningen, Bottmingen, Allschwil and Muttenz

Basel-Landschaft addresses on the city's doorstep, where no Basel-Stadt office, deadline or service reaches.

  • Aesch and Reinach

The International School Basel has its campuses in these two towns, both of them on the Basel-Landschaft side of the line.

The road from the UK to Basel

Route: Channel crossing at Folkestone or Dover, then the A26, the A4 past Reims, and the A35 through Alsace to Saint-Louis — about 470 miles from Calais.

The motorway runs to the Swiss frontier on the city's western edge at Saint-Louis, so the border formalities happen at the edge of Basel rather than far behind it. A load coming down the German side leaves the A5 at Weil am Rhein instead, on the other bank of the Rhine.

We collect anywhere in the UK. Collection is free within 30 miles of our Coulsdon depot; beyond that a mileage contribution applies and is shown in your quote.

When to move

  • Fasnacht shuts the middle of the city

Basler Fasnacht runs three whole days from the Monday Morgestraich, and the canton publishes the dates years ahead: 15 to 17 February 2027, then 6 to 8 March 2028. On the Tuesday no motorised vehicle may enter the Fasnacht perimeter at all. That week, inner-city goods handling is cut to Monday through Thursday, seven until eleven.

  • The autumn fair occupies the squares

The Basler Herbstmesse takes over seven public squares in the middle of the city for two weeks from late October; in 2026 it runs from 24 October to 8 November, with Münsterplatz the principal site. The canton publishes no road closures alongside it, so treat the squares themselves as unavailable and pick a loading point away from them.

Paperwork once you arrive in Basel

  • Two offices, and biometrics at the first

A new arrival registers at the Einwohneramt on the Spiegelgasse, and a foreign national's fingerprints and photograph are taken at that appointment. The residence-permit card itself comes afterwards from the Migrationsamt, which is a separate office again. Arrivals in Riehen and Bettingen are recorded by their own Gemeindeverwaltung rather than by the city's counter.

  • The border office is the one that sees your furniture

The load is cleared at a border customs office — here, one on the city's own edge — on BAZG form 18.44. Such an office takes removal goods only in the hours it keeps for commercial traffic, Monday to Friday, with a Saturday morning at a few of the larger ones, and it shuts on federal and cantonal holidays. A Basel delivery is timed to that counter.

Customs when moving to Switzerland

Switzerland is not in the EU. You need Swiss customs Form 18.44 (Effets de déménagement), a signed valued inventory in duplicate, a residence permit or confirmation of application, and a rental contract. Clearance is handled by our Swiss agent at Basel or Geneva.

Moving from Basel back to the UK

Leaving Basel is the lighter errand of the two: the departure notice goes to the Einwohnerkontrolle, which takes it online, and Riehen and Bettingen take their own. Because the frontier sits on the city's western edge, the outbound formalities are done a short run from the door rather than far back down the route.

Moving to Basel — your questions

How much does a removal from the UK to Basel cost?

Transport and customs documentation for a one-bedroom part load from the UK to Basel cost £2,229 – £2,976, and for a three-bedroom house £4,779 – £6,524. Packing, transit cover and stairs or parking at either end are priced on top, from your own answers. Transit is 4–8 days door to door via Eurotunnel then E17/E25 through France. Small consignments travel as part loads from around £1,096 for roughly 5 m³. Your own price depends on volume, the packing and cover you choose, access at both ends and how flexible your dates are — the online quote works it out in about three minutes.

How long does a removal to Basel take?

Transit to Basel is typically 4–8 days door to door. We run fortnightly, both directions. A part load waits for its scheduled run and is given a delivery window; a dedicated vehicle travels direct on the date you choose.

Which sign outside my door lets us load at all?

The canton spells that out sign by sign. Under a plain Parkverbot, a no-parking sign, loading is always allowed. Under a Halteverbot it is allowed only where the plate adds “Güterumschlag gestattet”, and in a street under a Fahrverbot only where the plate adds “Zufahrt zum Güterumschlag gestattet”. Photograph the signs at your door and send the pictures with your survey.

We are moving to Riehen. Does the city's sign service reach us?

Yes. The Kantonspolizei's mobile no-parking signs are ordered for moves to or within Basel-Stadt, Riehen and Bettingen — the canton's three municipalities, and no more. The police can refuse a request where the conditions are not met, or where the parking space you asked for is already taken. A street a few hundred metres further out is in another canton and outside the service altogether.

I am moving to Binningen or Allschwil — is that Basel?

Not for anything official. Those are Basel-Landschaft communes in a separate canton, so the Basel-Stadt police's no-parking signs stop at the boundary and you do not register at the city's Einwohneramt. The International School Basel campuses at Aesch and Reinach are on the same side of that line. Say which commune, not just the postcode: it decides which office your street answers to.

Can anything be set down on the pavement while we load?

Only with the Allmendverwaltung's agreement. Basel treats machinery, scaffolding, skips, material stores and transfer areas on public ground as notifiable or permit-bearing, and the Tiefbauamt wants the application at least two weeks ahead for a skip, a transfer area or scaffolding. Installations under ten square metres, for twenty days at most, need notification only.

How do I book my move to Basel?

Get your estimate online in about three minutes. You can secure your date straight away with a 25% deposit — refunded in full if the survey changes the price and you would rather not go ahead — or have the free survey first. Either way the survey fixes the price, and the balance is due on the day we collect. Your customs documents, inventory and dates are then handled in your own online portal.
