Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Florence
Who files for the street, and what goes in the file
Street space is a temporary concession covering scaffolding, building sites and removals, and it exists only on the Geoworks portal behind an Italian digital identity: SPID, CIE or CNS. Private individuals, firms and condominium administrators may apply; filing for somebody else needs a delega, a written authority, with identity documents. The file carries a measured drawing of the ground — street and pavement widths, which side, the house number.
Twenty-one days, and a second application if parking changes
For a removal-length occupation — under twelve hours a day, the ground cleared each evening — the Comune states the concession is issued not before twenty-one days from a complete application, and it commits to no date beyond that. Altering the parking or the traffic flow is a separate request: a temporary mobility order, authorised first by the Polizia Municipale. Occupying without the concession counts as abusive and is penalised.
Five ZTL sectors, and gates that are never open
The historic centre is a Zona a Traffico Limitato of five sectors: A, B, O, F and G. In A, B and O the gates watch from half past seven in the morning until eight at night, and until four on Saturday. A summer night zone covers all five, on dates the Comune re-issues by ordinance yearly. Some gates stay barred to everything but buses and emergencies.
Above three and a half tonnes, the window is dawn
A vehicle over three and a half tonnes — thirty-five quintali in the Comune's wording — can normally be authorised into the ZTL only between six and half past eight in the morning, and there is no online permit for one. The request goes by e-mail to the Polizia Municipale's Centro Storico command with the vehicle documents, and that office prescribes the route and the hours.
Two emission schemes, and the quieter one bites
The Scudo Verde is an environmental ZTL over most of the built-up area, roughly thirty-eight square kilometres behind camera gates. It takes no toll, needs no sticker, runs at every hour, and for now catches only the oldest goods vehicles; the Comune has announced a tighter stage. What reaches a working van is the weekday ban on older diesels inside the Beccaria–Libertà ring, half past eight until half past six.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Florence end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.
Where we deliver in and around Florence
Centro Storico, Quartiere 1
North of the Arno in ZTL sectors A and B. Around the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria the streets are pedestrian, so the last stretch is carried.
Oltrarno — Santo Spirito, San Frediano, San Niccolò
Sector O, which has its own published street list. A big vehicle usually stands on a Lungarno while the load crosses the bridge in stages.
Campo di Marte and Le Cure
The first belt east of the centre: beyond the ZTL, inside the Scudo Verde, and partly inside the older-diesel ring at Piazza della Libertà.
Careggi, Rifredi and Novoli
Twentieth-century streets and courtyards take a full-size vehicle, but the T1 alignment limits where it stands and the concession wants a tramway declaration.
Fiesole and San Domenico
A separate comune in the hills, with the European University Institute at the Badia Fiesolana. The climb is narrow and the permission is Fiesole's own.
Bagno a Ripoli
Another comune of its own, the T3 terminus, and the International School of Florence junior campus at Villa le Tavernule on Via del Carota.
Viuzzo di Gattaia, under Piazzale Michelangelo
That school's upper campus states it has no drop-off zone and sends parents to Piazza Ferrucci — a fair warning about the width of the lane.
Scandicci
A comune apart at the T1 terminus, where street permission is still a stamped paper application lodged with its own Polizia Locale.
The road from the UK to Florence
Route: Eurotunnel from Folkestone, then French motorway to Modane, the Fréjus tunnel onto the Italian A32, and the A1 south past Bologna — about 930 miles from Calais.
Italy sells no motorway vignette: tolls are paid at the barrier by the kilometre, and the class is set by the number of axles and the height measured at the front axle. The Fréjus tunnel joins the French A43 in the Maurienne to the Italian A32 at Bardonecchia.

When to move
Keep out of the centre in late June
The twenty-fourth of June is San Giovanni, the patron saint's day and a local holiday: offices and many shops shut for the afternoon or all day. The Calcio Storico final is played that afternoon in Piazza Santa Croce, with semi-finals earlier in the month, and fresh mobility orders round the quarter each year. Tuscan state lessons end in the first half of June, which is when families want to travel.
Tuesday mornings belong to the Cascine
The Mercato delle Cascine occupies about three kilometres of Viale Lincoln every Tuesday morning, with extra dates before Christmas and Easter, and the plant market takes Via Pellicceria on Thursday mornings. Neither street is available to stand a vehicle while they are running.
Sundays: the fairs and the November race
Monthly fairs take Piazza Santo Spirito, Piazza Santissima Annunziata and the Fortezza da Basso gardens on set Sundays, so check the pattern against your date. The city marathon shuts the centre and the Lungarni on the last Sunday of November, with parking bans on the route from early morning and buses diverted across the quarter.
Paperwork once you arrive in Florence
A British passport is now a third-country passport
Anyone British moving to Italy today travels on a visa obtained before leaving, because a British passport is now a third-country passport. Britons lawfully resident before the Withdrawal Agreement took effect stand elsewhere entirely: their document is the biometric carta di soggiorno, issued by the questura covering their address, and a new arrival cannot apply for one. The two routes never mix.
The dichiarazione di residenza, and where it goes
Registering your address is a dichiarazione di residenza to the Comune's anagrafe, and nothing is charged for it. Lodge it on the national ANPR portal with a digital identity, by e-mail to the anagrafe's certified address — an ordinary mailbox is accepted — or by recorded delivery to Palazzo Vecchio. A valid permesso di soggiorno and passports for every member of the household go with it. No counter, no telephone.
Twenty days to declare, then forty-five of checking
Italian law allows twenty days from the move for that declaration. Residence dates from the day the Comune receives the papers, and the entry itself is made within two working days. The Polizia Municipale then has forty-five days to verify that you genuinely live at the address, with a visit. Anything that waits on a residence certificate waits behind that visit.
Customs when moving to Italy
Italy requires the Agenzia delle Dogane transfer-of-residence file, including a codice fiscale, a valued inventory, and either an Italian residence certificate or a signed declaration of intent to register within the statutory period.

Moving from Florence back to the UK
Leaving is a filing of its own: a cancellazione anagrafica per trasferimento all'estero, signed by every adult with copies of their identity documents, sent to the anagrafe's certified address or by recorded delivery to Palazzo Vecchio. A missing signature has it refused. Settle the street first, though: the concession is still issued no sooner than three weeks after a complete application.

How long does a removal to Florence take?

Who can apply for permission to stand a removal vehicle in my street?
Someone holding an Italian digital identity. Geoworks is the only route, and it opens to SPID, CIE or CNS credentials, so the applicant is you, your condominium administrator, or an agent you have given a signed delega to, with identity documents for both of you. Decide early who will file, because nothing else about the date can be settled until that is answered.
My flat is in a pedestrian street near the Duomo. Can anything reach the door?
No vehicle can. A ZTL permit does not open pedestrian areas or bus lanes, and some gates are barred to everything but buses and emergency vehicles at every hour. The load is carried the last stretch on foot. What decides the job is the carry: pace out the distance from the nearest street a vehicle may lawfully stand in, and tell us that figure.
Does the Scudo Verde keep a removal lorry out of Florence?
Not a current one. The Scudo Verde is an environmental ZTL over most of the built-up area, running at all hours with no toll and no sticker to buy, and it presently stops only the oldest goods vehicles. The scheme that catches far more is the weekday ban on older diesel vans and lorries inside the ring between Piazza Beccaria and Piazza della Libertà.
Why would the vehicle be working outside my building at six in the morning?
Because anything over three and a half tonnes is normally authorised into the ZTL only between six and half past eight, and the Polizia Municipale prescribes the route and the hours when it grants that request. The lorry itself is named in advance, from its registration documents, so a substitution on the day breaks the authorisation.
I am moving to Fiesole. Does a Florence permit cover the address?
It does not. Fiesole, Bagno a Ripoli, Scandicci, Sesto Fiorentino and Campi Bisenzio are municipalities in their own right, and Geoworks stops at the city boundary. Fiesole runs its own occupation procedure through its revenue service and allows itself thirty days; Scandicci still wants a stamped paper application. Give the full address at the survey, not just the town.
Will the tram works get in the way of my delivery?
They may, on the south-eastern side. The T3 line between Piazza della Libertà and Bagno a Ripoli has been under construction since the start of 2025, along the ring boulevards, Viale Giovine Italia, the Lungarni and Viale Giannotti, and is programmed to finish by the end of 2026. Where tram infrastructure is involved, the street application carries a signed interference declaration.
