Rome splits a removal between two permissions from two different bodies. The kerb outside your door is granted by the Municipio the street belongs to. Driving into a central Zona a Traffico Limitato is a separate permit from the city's mobility company. There is no single removal permit here, and the temporary ZTL categories include no trasloco at all.

You get a private page for your move: the customs checklist for Italy and somewhere to upload each document. If you listed your items one by one, that list is already there — add a rough value to each line and it becomes the valued inventory customs ask for.
Collection in the UK, delivery in Rome
On a shared load you choose the collection day and we give you a delivery window, confirming the day itself once the vehicle has cleared customs. With a vehicle of your own, both dates are yours. The balance is due on the day we collect.

Getting a removal vehicle to your door in Rome
Two permissions, and two different bodies
Holding the kerb is a concessione di occupazione temporanea di suolo pubblico, granted by the Municipio whose territory the street sits in. Rome has fifteen of them and each runs its own office, so the counter changes with the delivery address. An address beyond the Roma Capitale boundary is a different comune again, with rules of its own.
What the Municipio's counter wants, and when
Roma Capitale allows itself up to thirty days from the application to issue that concession, and longer where the street carries heritage constraints, so the date wants settling early. Municipio I's Ufficio O.S.P. Cantieri names traslochi, removals, in its own published remit and opens its counter on Tuesday mornings by appointment only. Where an autoscala does the work, its registration document goes in with the file.
The central ZTLs are on for most of the working day
The Centro Storico zone runs 06:30–18:00 Monday to Friday and 14:00–18:00 on Saturday. The Tridente holds until 19:00 and covers every vehicle, motorcycles included. Trastevere lifts at 10:00, and night zones follow on Friday and Saturday. Hours shift with the season. Only the permit in your hand authorises the gate: having applied for one is no defence.
Why length, not just access, sets the vehicle
A lorry longer than seven and a half metres is restricted across a broad band outside the central zones, from five in the morning to midnight every day, under an experimental scheme that runs to the end of 2026. The goods-vehicle ZTL permit separately wants a DURC, the Italian contributions certificate. Both point at the size of vehicle rather than the size of the move.
The Fascia Verde, and the days it tightens
Rome's low-emission zone is the ZTL Fascia Verde, set by a mayoral ordinance that runs from the start of November to the end of October. Its standing ban catches the oldest petrol and diesel vehicles, Monday to Saturday, around the clock, apart from midweek public holidays. On a red air-quality alert it closes to diesel goods vehicles of any age, 07:30–20:30.
How this shows up in your quote. The quote asks about each end of the move. Tick “parking suspension or permit required” or “narrow street” for the Rome end and each is priced as its own line, along with the floor and whether there is a lift. A furniture hoist is not part of the online price: show us the stairs and windows at your survey and, where one is needed, it is priced then.
Where we deliver in and around Rome
Centro Storico
The rioni hold their daytime zone until 18:00, with a night zone on Friday and Saturday. Streets that take a full-size vehicle are rare.
Trastevere
Its daytime zone lifts at 10:00, so a mid-morning start is lawful here while the Centro Storico stays closed. A night zone returns at the weekend.
Aurelio
St George's City Centre junior campus stands on Via di Santa Maria Mediatrice, off the Via Aurelia. Not one of the named central ZTLs.
La Storta and the Via Cassia
St George's senior school sits at Via del Cenacolo, sixteen kilometres out. Villas and low-rise estates beyond the ring road, and open ground for a vehicle.
Monteverde and Portuense
Ambrit International School is on Via F. Tajani. Inter-war and post-war blocks up a hill, tight side streets, kerbs parked solid.
Camilluccia, Vigna Clara and Fleming
Marymount International School is at Via di Villa Lauchli. Gated villini and later condominiums, where a steep private approach is the usual obstacle.
Appia Antica
This zone went to electronic gates in September 2026: you must leave by the gate you entered, within the day, at thirty kilometres an hour.
The road from the UK to Rome
Route: Eurotunnel or ferry to Calais, French toll motorway to Lyon, the Maurienne valley and the Fréjus tunnel into Piedmont, then south past Bologna and Florence — about 1,090 miles from Calais.
The Fréjus is the Alpine crossing on this run, and it sets two limits of its own: its operator bars the oldest goods vehicles and caps height at four metres thirty, which decides whether a tall box body can come this way. After the tunnel comes the Autostrada del Sole, ending on the Grande Raccordo Anulare that rings the city.

When to move
August switches the night zones off
The night ZTLs at the Centro Storico, Trastevere, San Lorenzo and Testaccio are inactive through August, so a late-evening load is possible then in streets shut at that hour for the rest of the year. Daytime zones run as usual, so it is the evening that changes, not the day.
The emission ordinance turns over on the first of November
Rome's Fascia Verde rules are made a year at a time, running to the end of October, and the last two were signed days before they took effect. A move quoted in October may be carried out under a different set. That is why this page carries the date it was last checked.
One central rule is in front of the courts
As at September 2026, a mayoral ordinance signed in July would have shut ZTL A1 to goods vehicles 08:00–18:00 until December, even to holders of valid ZTL permits. The regional administrative court suspended it and listed a hearing for late September. Where that has landed is the first thing to establish for a Tridente address.
Paperwork once you arrive in Rome
Your Anagrafe is your Municipio's
The declaration of residence goes to the Anagrafe of the Municipio your street belongs to, not to a city-wide counter. Rome takes it online, by certified PEC mail, by registered post or in person; plain e-mail stopped being accepted in March 2022. Keep a copy of whatever you lodge — it is what your import file is built on.
Two clocks, and the permit runs first
The residence permit and the registration are separate matters on separate timetables, and the permit is the one that runs first. The FCDO tells British nationals to apply for a permesso di soggiorno within eight days of reaching Italy, and to register residence once the stay will run past three months. Both want the address you are moving into.
Customs when moving to Italy
Italy requires the Agenzia delle Dogane transfer-of-residence file, including a codice fiscale, a valued inventory, and either an Italian residence certificate or a signed declaration of intent to register within the statutory period.

Moving from Rome back to the UK
Going home from Rome is the same two permissions in reverse, taken in a different order: the gate permit decides whether the vehicle can reach the door at all, and the Municipio's concession holds the kerb once it is there. Deregistering is a filing at that same Municipio's Anagrafe, and the cancellation here and the new registration in the UK take effect from one date.

Who grants permission to stand a removal lorry outside my building in Rome?
Your Municipio does, not the city centrally and not the police. The permission is a concessione di occupazione temporanea di suolo pubblico, and Rome runs fifteen Municipi, each with its own office and its own counter hours. Roma Capitale allows itself up to thirty days from the application to issue one, which is why the address is wanted early.
Can a removal vehicle get into the historic centre at all?
Yes, either outside the zone's hours or with a ZTL permit from Roma Servizi per la Mobilità. The Centro Storico is closed from half past six in the morning until six at night on weekdays, which leaves an early start or an evening, and a night zone takes over at the weekend. The hours shift with the season, so they are worth re-checking against the current ordinance.
Will the Fascia Verde stop a modern lorry reaching my new address?
Not on an ordinary day. The standing ban is aimed at the oldest petrol and diesel vehicles, so a current removal vehicle is outside it. The exception is a red air-quality alert, when diesel goods vehicles of any age are shut out 07:30–20:30 and a date may have to move. Roma Capitale publishes an address look-up for the perimeter.
My flat is up four floors of a palazzo with a lift the size of a cupboard. What then?
Large pieces go out through a window on an autoscala, the external furniture lift Romans also call a piattaforma aerea. Rome's own suolo pubblico procedure is written around it: the lift truck's registration document goes into the concession file, so the machine is named before the date is fixed rather than found on the morning.
Is an address outside the Grande Raccordo Anulare easier to deliver to?
Usually, yes. Beyond the ring a full-size vehicle can often reach the door, and the central Zone a Traffico Limitato are behind you. Two things still bite: Roma Capitale's boundary runs well past the GRA in places, so check which comune the address is in, and a private drive up to a villa can be steeper or tighter than the street was.
